Critical thinking in OB ... HELP!!

I know that I`m supposed to be doing critical thinking when I'm in clinical but I just see it as common sense.. I don`t get what else I should be doing to practice this skill more since we aren`t really being told much-- we are just thrown into situations and then we have to figure out what to do. What are examples of critical thinking when your in OB.. ??

I haven't done OB yet, I'll be there halfway through this semester. So I can't really think of anything in particular, but I just wanted to make the suggestion that case studies can really help. My book has a bunch of them on the CD-rom that came with it. I'm sure you can also find some online.

Monitoring VS, managing meds, fetal HR and contractions. Understand how treating mom effects the baby and vice-versa. That interplay is the biggest part of OB.

My experience, as a neo-sexist-pig:D, is that OB is frequently treated as a religious rite and practice by its practioners. To instructors: don't make it difficut just because you think students should be "in awe..."

Having said that, I have the highest respect for most of my collegues in OB. Its no less complex or critical than IC, trauma, onc, etc.. The problem (IME) is that some instructors are more in love with embellishing the "mystique" of OB, than effectively teaching .
