How do I get into the ICU?

After I complete my BSN, how do I get directly into the ICU w/o having to be in med/surg for a year? What are my chances (percentage wise)?

Depends on your area. Look for new grad residency programs that offer critical care spots.

I read in your other post that you are still on the path to becoming an RN.

I recommend getting a job as an ICU tech. Prove that you have great work ethic and you could receive a new grad offer.

This is what I've done and I'm going to start in ICU.

If that isn't feasible, apply for critical care internships and try to do your capstone in ICU.

Nice ICUman, is your intention to become a crna? As a new grad in Florida, how hard is it for new RNs to practice in ICU? And how long did you work as an icu tech?

I will have 2.5 years in ICU when I get my RN.

I think you have a good shot @ ICU in the sunshine state if you network and are willing to relocate.

And no, I am going the NP route.

If I did CRNA, my only motive would be the financial reward of the profession. I prefer a different path.

Hi Lev,

can you provide any websites or info on the new grad residency programs you speak of? Also, all of the RN-ICU positions I've looked at here in FL require 1-2 years of related experience and don't hire new grads. They are totally against it.

You may have to decide whether starting out in ICU is a priority or staying local. Applying to all new grad residencies that offer ICU placement would likely be your best path (or smaller hospital). The wider the net you cast, the more likely you will get an ICU new grad residency. You are more likely to get a residency if you have a Senior Capstone in ICU or work as a tech in ICU.

I am saying if you are a tech you will have a fantastic shot in the ICU as a new grad RN.

I have seen exactly that happen before! A classmate did exactly that and is working in an ICU now.

I did it! If you are willing to apply a lot of different places, maybe even in different states and more rural areas, I'd say your chances are very good.
