Answer this for me please:

In a large acute care hospital a client tells you he uses CPAP machine every night but he left his machine at home.he is concerned about sleeping without it .what is most appropriate action to take ?

A. Ask the supervisor for direction

B. Reassure the client he won't need the machine at night

C. Ask the respiratory therapist to order a CPAP machine

D. Call the admitting physician to request an order for CPAP machine

@akaur, you are already licensed as a LPN and you asked "what if this (question) is on the NCLEX?" Did you mean the NCLEX RN?

The question does not describe the nurse as a LPN or the workplace policies and when writing the NCLEX you should not add details that do not exist in the question.

D. This is the only correct answer. Even though patient uses it at night at home, at the hospital it would need an order.

Yes I mean NCLEX RN

Ok

Here we go

The correct answer is D

I will contact the MD for order

Thanks a lot everyone who helped me understand this better .i was always thinking that if you don't know what to do,contact a person on higher position than you .for example a team leader or supervisor .

This is an awesome site to gain a lot of knowledge ....:)

I am posting another question

Yes I mean NCLEX RN

Use the knowledge, skills and judgement that are expected of a RN when answering the NCLEX RN questions. Do not add information to the questions, read only what is written and choose the best answer based on the information that is given.

There is a section where you can post your questions, but just a heads up, posters will want to see you post what you THINK the answer is and your rationale is. So that it isn't us simply doing your work for you. We understand you aren't sure of the answer but it shows effort you tried and helps us know where your thinking might be to know what needs to be worked on.

Certainly ask the supervisor if you are not clear on the action. CPAP is a respiratory intervention that requires a doctor's order, that RT would need to provide.

Now you know the process. Educate yourself on CPAP/ BI-PAP respiratory therapy. It is the same as providing previously prescribed home medications. If the prescribed therapy is not continued... the patient could get in big trouble.. fast.

Yes yes YES. Resist the urge to say "but what if..." when reading these questions. Because if you're doing that, then you're reading too much into the question. And then you risk answering based on things that might not actually be there.

Tell me an answer form these 4 options .what is appropriate ?i know the answer E already .what if this is on NCLEX ?what should be the best response

As a CPAP PATIENT and ICU nurse, the best thing to do would be to send a family member home to get the machine, if that's feasible. Respiratory therapy tells me they don't have enough CPAP machines to go around for every CPAP patient who forgets to bring his machine.

B is absolutely inappropriate -- a sleep apnea patient needs the machine every time they sleep. My husband and I both nap with our PAP. No sleeping without the CPAP machine unless we're intubated.

RT cannot set up a CPAP without orders. So C is a no go.

If the admitting physician has access to the sleep study data to know what the patient's titrated settings are, then they can write an order for CPAP and then you can order the machine from RT. if they have one.

I did it .

I got the education about CPAP and Bipap .i learned that these are the two machines used for sleep apnea and the only difference is the pressure setting between the two .

They deliver continuos airway pressure to the client with breathing difficulty at night .

I did my homework :)
