Cox College FNP

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

Hey everyone! I was interested in the FNP program at Cox College in Missouri and I'm a little worried. Not sure what to expect. For my Nursing school my GPA was 3.1, but my prerequisites GPA was 3.71. So they should a great about 3.4 GPA. What can I expect from the school? Any previous or current students shed any light on what they like or dislike about the program? Any information will be appreciated.

Specializes in Geriatrics, rehabilitation, HMO Clinical Quality.

I am interested in this school as well. May I ask how much nursing experience is the average for accepted applicants? I have been an RN for 14 years but only 3 years of floor experience back 9 years ago and volunteering now for two years (I’m also an OT and do that full time for flexibility with hours). I’m afraid my experience may be too old or not enough. What do you think?

Thanks!

You seem like a great candidate. Just apply.

Specializes in Primary Care; Child Advocacy; Child Abuse; ED.

Is there a state requirement for clinicals or can they be completed in any state? For example, do you have to complete all your clinical hours in the state of Missouri. thanks for the feed back!

Sorry it has been so long since I posted here. I started the program in Missouri (I also received my Asn and bsn at Cox) then moved to California during my first semester. It was a little challenging getting clinical sites but I managed. I hope you applied and are doing well in the program!

I have been accepted into the Cox College FNP program! (Jan 2020) I have a few questions! It appears to be that most students are enjoying the program

1) Any advice? How were the exams and studying?

2) Were you able to work full time?

3) For your primary care clinicals, are you able to do them in the hospital with the Nurse Practitioner hospitalist?

Thanks yall!

I enjoyed the program (as much as one enjoys FNP school). The exams are tough but that’s what prepares you. I worked part time during the program. I was busy, particularly during the 1st year, but I also have 3 active kids. I don’t believe you can do the clinicals with a hospitalist, I’m pretty sure they have to be done in a primary care clinic setting. You will have 60 speciality hours during the last semester that you can do with a hospitalist.

Congrats ? I will put my advice last. Exams were challenging but I expected that. I worked full-time. I have seven children and my husband and myself are disabled veterans. I needed to work. I did work as a RN care manager in a VA primary care clinic. I think that helped with the program because I could apply what I was learning and I had MDs and NPs around to ask questions. I agree with the other Cox student, I do not believe that you can use a hospitalist during primary care but you can during specialty probably.

My advice is to get a calendar and plug in due dates and get another calendar for when you need to complete things. That is two different things. Example I want to have this part of an assignment done although the whole assignment is due a different day. The first day you receive your syllabus plug in your due dates. Get a usb and keep all your stuff on one. You do your project every semester and it will be a life saver knowing that you have everything in one place. It worked better doing it that way for me. Interact with your cohort because you guys can keep each other motivated and on tract. Make sure you understand people are watching you during clinical and work (you are interviewing). I was offered a position at every clinical site, other staff also told people about me and I was offered jobs. To be honest I didn’t apply to any position but have been offered several jobs. I still do get offers. Take everyday one day at a time. Oh make sure that you have your preceptors in advance. I always had two just in case something happened with the other one. Congrats and happy studies!

Thank you all so much for your advice and comments! I just purchased a planner, and I am working on securing preceptors right now! Great advice. Thank you all so much!

Congrats to everyone also!

Hey! I've applied and am waiting to hear back about Fall for this year. How do you like it so far?

If you're local to Springfield, did you consider MSU? I have an acceptance from them but am torn between the programs.

For those of you who graduated, did you feel well prepared for your job? Or when you started working did you feel like there was a large learning curve?

Hi!

Are there any current FNP students that can attest to Cox's FNP program? I start Spring 2023. Really excited by nervous about the whole process of starting.

1) Are the professors available when needed?

2) How are the exams? Proctored, timed, and open note)  How many exams per class?

3) When are most assignments due?

4) Are there a lot of group projects?

Thanks
