I am working as a 3-11 charge nurse at a county run facility and it is being sold to a private firm. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this type of change. What to expect? My employers are tight lipped about it all. I've heard that the pay will probably go down and the insurance rates go up. I will be there for my 1 year anniversary on January 3rd 2013.

I would just wait and see, rumors tend to run rampant when change happens. When I worked in the hospital, we were getting sold the other way- from private to corporate, and there were rumors my unit was going to close, or they were going to lay off half the staff, and that our pay was most definitely getting cut. We were bought, and our pay stayed the same, the unit remained open, and there were no nursing layoffs. You never know and there is no use worrying now about it.

Thank you for your response. It is hard to wait and see. Probably the best advice!

No good ever comes of county/state jobs being privatized. Get ready for cost cutting, decreased benefits and at will employment. Good luck....

For what this is worth - when Division of Motor Vehicles was privatized in New Jersey, there were all kinds of woeful tales of expected horrors flying around. Personally, I think it turned out terrific for the consumer. And I believe many off the old State employees were were retained.
