coumadin nurse-new position

I would think that you would be providing patient education about coumadin, adverse effects, therapeutic effects, drug interactions, and the need to monitor PT/INR routinely. You might be drawing the labs and reporting the results to the provider and possibly changing the dosage based on a new order and PT/INR history. There is probably more to the position than this. During your interview ask questions about protocols and maybe get a written job description. Good Luck :)

I used to work next to the Coumadin RNs in the clinic setting. What they did was Internal Medicine docs would assign patients who required antithrombolytic therapy to the coumadin nurse who, using a protocol, would adjust dosing and order INRs and monitor. Patient education was paramount, and patient care still was involved as they would often be administering lovenox. Most of the nurses loved the position. I think yours will be similar.
