That's an insignificant question with a philosophical answer that you'll have to reread several times to understand. Nursing is a psychosocial discipline that ascribes heavily to psychology and to a lesser degree sociology. Most mental health theories in nursing are adopted from psychology and throw in old Hildegard. When I took nursing theory for grad school (gag!) we were told to pull in any theories we wanted from the allied health fields, medicine, and the psychosocial disciplines.

Thank you for your philosophical answer! Ok this is what i did
Sociology
Psychology
Dementia
Mental health that covered
Schizophrenia, bi polar and depression, this was taught solid and full time in a classroom and took 160 hours! Cgfns said that my school put this under mental health concepts , therefore did not account me many theory hours in mental health theory! I phoned my college and said this and they said mental health theory and mental health concept are the same !
I do understand what your saying to a degree, but i was told that mental health ascribes to the medical model and adds psychology as an addition like CBT
If you are trying to gain licensure as an IEN it doesn't matter what anyone but the BoN & CGFNS consider as psych/mental health nursing. Very few have been successful in appealing these decisions
I have not been refused! I did 144 hours over the requirement in clinicals alone in mental health and the rest i was at very least double the requirements but mostly 4x the requirements

Well, psych nurses aren't really medical. They're still nursing which is psychosocial. A RN, for example, working in a psych unit would give meds, yes, but still be primarily concerned with managing the milieu, i.e. the psychosocial/environmental stuff.
The advanced practice registered nurses, such as the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, would largely follow a medical model. In that instance, let's say they have a new patient. They'll evaluate them with likely an observational sort of physical exam with no auscultating, palpating, etc., a review of systems, labs such as CBC, CMP, TSH, et al, assess with a DSM style of approach and then prescribe pharmacotherapy and potentially prescribe or recommend psychotherapy.
