:heartbeatHello everyone, I have been a nurse for 5 yrs with exp in ER, home health and rehab....I have recently applied for a position at the regional correctional facility. I am completely over working in the hospital!!!! I am unsure as to what the avg salary or hourly wage may be for a corrections nurse...am I correct in assuming that it is higher than working in a hospital? I do not know anyone personally that works in corrections, so I have no info to go on....can anyone enlighten me? I am really excited about this job, but want to ensure that I am fairly compensated. BTW, I just found this website and LOVE IT!!! Thanks alot...:wink2: I forgot to mention my location: virginia beach, va. Also, I believe that this is a gov't contract job, state not federal.

Specializes in a little of everthing.

Congratulations!

I hope you will not be too dissappointed with your pay. In my area, corrections pay is less than hospital pay. Maybe it is different in your area.

Specializes in corrections, pediatrics, geriatrics, ...

I am sure that the pay varies from state to state. I get paid as an LPN about what my RN mother makes, but I have also been working in corrections for years and years and years....I hope you like it...it has it's ups and downs. Hopefully you will miss most of the pitfalls!

I've been in correctional nursing for almost two years. It's not the inmates you have to watch out for, it's your co-workers. It is a whole lot less hectic than a hospital, but you will be on your own a lot. Believe me when I say this, correctional nursing is a whole 'nother world in itself!!! ENJOY!!!

Specializes in Addictions, Corrections, QA/Education.

The pay is more in corrections than the regional hospital in my area. Its not a bad place to work!

Where i work you make more unless you take pay in place of benefits from the hospital and then the small difference in pay is made up by the great benefits
