  1. Terminated!

The ACA oversees most correctional facilities, medical departments included. Usually it is no easy task to pass an ACA inspection...and this facility you speak of would not. I would suggest you get in touch with the ACA, because this facility sounds ...
  2. Terminated!

The ACA oversees most correctional facilities and their medical departments...That is where I would start. By ACA standards that place would not just be lacking, it would be criminally neglegent.. Good luck!
  3. OTC meds given upon request?

I don't know what state you are in Truegem, but I was a bit nauseated there myself...These guys here get charged three bucks for the sick call, three dollars for each med, and have no carpet, and a four inch mattress.. I am in happy happy land...
  4. How would you react to being taken hostage?"

I was assaulted and grabbed by a psychotic inmate with full blown AIDS back in 1997. He didn't have me for a hostage long enough for me to consider what I would do though...who knows? Have to wait until I was stuck and then decide what worked for me ...
  5. I am not ashamed

Believe me correctional nursing is more than real nursing...it's all nursing. We do a little of everything, psych, geriatric, pediatric, oncology, med surg, neurology, infection control, triage, trauma...what is there that we don't do? And usually al...
  6. womens nurses in the jail??? how is...really

You would be working with young males, so catcalls are a given...open masturbation is common (at least where I have worked) attempting to ejaculate on the nurses was a game for some of the guys for a while...but these are the Max guys...keep in mind ...
  7. Cca

I left CCA in 2006 and am still STILL waiting on back pay that they owe me. I have had to threaten to contact an attorney. I worked in a primarily medium/minimum security facility and truly felt more in danger than I ever did working in a state maxim...
  8. My new job

I wish you the best of luck...I would rather work with men any day. We have one unit of women where I work and I dread dealing with them...women are so much more violent and foul than the men...But, I can't think of any place I have worked in the pas...
  9. Why Do You Do What You Do?

I too love the variety. I have seen stabbings, rapes, riots, hostage situations, ...let me tell you about the guy who used to cut open his abdomen, pull his intestines out and squirt them at people! You can't make this stuff up!!! I could tell you st...
  10. Correctional nursing does it take a toll

I have worked in corrections going on thirteen years. I have worked with maximum security, death row, all the other classifications, and juvenile. I have dealt with people who have committed such heinous acts it would make you wonder if you could per...
  11. New to Correctional Nursing

I am sure that the pay varies from state to state. I get paid as an LPN about what my RN mother makes, but I have also been working in corrections for years and years and years....I hope you like it...it has it's ups and downs. Hopefully you will mis...
  12. OTC meds given upon request?

I am sure it varies from state to state, but we give out NO OTC meds, they either buy them from commissary or they fill out a sick call, get charged for the sick call, then the meds too...usually tylenol is a two day med...alot to pay for six bucks!
  13. Something doesn't feel right

Okay, I too must ask why are you being left alone with inmates? No matter what their security classification, you should have an officer to supervise when they are there. Does your radio have an alarm? The red button on top? What could they want to c...
  14. Terminated!

Okay, I have worked many many facilities, and even well trained, I didn't start my last facility job without two weeks accompanied training....Sounds like you worked in a death trap! I would fight, but not only would I fight the termination, I would ...
  15. Advice needed from experienced correctional nurses!

I have been working in correctional nursing field for about thirteen years and I would say that what you have to deal with on a daily basis depends on what sort of facility you work at. I have worked maximum security, death row, med, min security, wo...
