considering nursing...

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone - first time posting here. I am very, very strongly considering going back to school for nursing, and I would love to get your input on a few things before I make the leap. I am currently a medical transcriptionist working from home, and with nearly every report that I transcribe I'm wishing that I was there WITH the patient instead of typing about him/her. I have always had an intense interest in medicine but never "went for it" like I'm considering doing now. I was wondering if you might be willing to share a few things with me about the nursing field, such as what you like most about your job, and what you like the least. What do you find most challenging? What do you find most rewarding? What advice would you give to someone considering nursing?

Thanks so much for any and all advice/tips/suggestions you are willing to give!

This is career #3 for me also! Started nursing school in my 40's, used to be vet tech and dog groomer! For 3 yrs I would walk into my own shop and think to myself, "I just want to be a nurse!" Then one day I put up a closing sign, got a job at a local nursing home, trained to be a CNA, went to nursing school, worked in hospital as CNA till I graduated, and the greatest day of my life (working life that is) was the day the NM moved my name up under the nurses on the schedule! I love nursing!

GOOD FOR YOU! I hope to be one sooner, rather than later.

This waiting game is ALREADY killing me!

anybody out there?

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

yes, what do you need? glad to help.

I think I'm concerned about making this change to nursing because it will be career #3 for me - I worked as a chemist for 13 years before working as a medical transcriptionist. Looking back now, I really should have followed my heart and gone into the medical field from the start (hindsight is always 20/20, right?) but better late than never! Anyway, thanks again for your input.

I hear ya baby! I have been a dosimetry tech at a nuclear plant, a flightline mechanic in the Air Force, an Exercise Physiologist working rehab, and (currently) a mother of a 3 year old boy! I am going back to school in January for my RN

Think about it like this: You will be 2 years older two years from now no mater what- what else are you going to be? Never let fear stand in the way, my friend.

I was a teacher before I went back for nursing. It's been almost 20 years and it is the BEST decision I ever made. Good luck!
