considering nursing school at 45 yo

Published

Has anyone else starting nursing school at the age of 45 or so? My youngest will be a senior in high school next year and my other two in college. I have waited a long time to go back to school. I wanted to know if others have gone back in mid life.

At one time I worked as a classroom and clinical nursing instructor and my very BEST students were ALWAYS the older ones who were just starting their careers in their 40's and 50's. You will do great!!!!!!

Specializes in Women's health, Ped's, clinical trials.

I am 52. I graduated with a BSN 30 years ago. I am a wonderful nurse. I have greatly contributed to the profession. But nursing has not given to me. Nurse's are not appreciated or valued by hospital's, or employers. We are blamed for everything.

If I had a second chance, knowing what I do now.....Not sure I would go there. Speech pathology, or physical therapy.. or a dietician.

But go for it.

Graduated at age 51. Travel the country full time as a travel nurse, work three days a week, play the rest of the time. The actual work is rewarding and enjoyable after a lifetime of corporate nonsense and the stress of self employment.

Would suggest completing not only pre-reqs but all non-nursing courses, allows you concentrate on the important learning in the nursing program.

School in mid life is a hoot!

I also started school at 48 and graduated at almost 52 with my BSN. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I had to re-learn how to study  The other students (most of whom were young enough to be my kids) treated me like just another student. I had a fantastic experience in school. I also found that many of my instructors who were about the same age as I was seemed to really like having a student who understood their cultural references in a lecture. Go for it and have a great time.

ok, hate to be a pain, but when you reply to something like this would you mind also saying what school you're attending?

it would be helpful to me because I'm sure some schools probably don't accept applicants over a certain age, even though they would never admit that's the reason

so it would be helpful to have a list of schools that are known do accept us older folks

I'm currently 46, turning 47 in a week, plan on applying next year

if anybody wants to email me the name of a school they know for sure accepts applicants over 45 years old, I'd appreciate it

yeah, I know I shouldn't post my e-mail on a forum, I'll probably get lots of spam, but I just don't trust paypal and so I won't pay the $30 membership fee to be able to get private messages

Hello, I started a LPN program in 1/06 at 43 it was difficult but I loved every minute of it. I got so nervous during test I asked to take them in a different room since it took me longer then everone else, the teachers never had a problem with it. The other class mates knew how important this was for me. I did LPN first just because I learn better little at a time. Im in the LPN -RN bridge program now and again Im the oldest in the class and take test by myself but I love it and yes I have to study a lot more :eek:than the 20 year olds but thats okay, I love this..You will be a great nurse everyone I know that has gone back is so much more caring. Go for it:yeah:

Hi. Im 52 yrs. old. I am finishing my last 2 pre-reqs next week then hoping to be chosen for program in spring. I find school, so much more enjoyable than in my younger years, not sure if its because it is what I want to do or what, but so much fun to me. I actually love learning. I waited until my children were grown, like yours. I know you will love it and be very proud of yourself. My children were my cheerleeders for me to go back. Best thing I ever did. Good luck to you.:yeah:
