considering nursing school at 45 yo

Published

Has anyone else starting nursing school at the age of 45 or so? My youngest will be a senior in high school next year and my other two in college. I have waited a long time to go back to school. I wanted to know if others have gone back in mid life.

You can DO IT! I am 51 and I just finished my pre-reqs. I applied to the nursing program in May. It will be at least a year on the waiting list. I"ll be 54-55 when I finish. I think it has been fascinating. There is so much more to learn. Just keep yourself healthy and stay young at heart!!:heartbeat

Good luck to all ..........:yeah:

Oh yeah, consider it....I'm 50 and am ready to finish first semester of nursing school. There are a lot of reasons to NOT DO nursing school but age isn't one of them!

Please go ahead and jump in! I am 51 and a Soph. in nursing school. It is time consuming and demanding but soooo rewarding! My kids are now 25,23 and 21 so there is no better time than now. I have made tons of great friends that range in age from 54 down to 19. It is the best thing I have done to pursue my life long dream. I am looking forward to working on my Masters as soon as I finish my BSN. Wishing all of you the best of luck!!

I will be graduating with a BSN in May and I will be 52 then. I love nursing school and can't wait to start my second career. And there is someone older than I am!:twocents:

I was 49 when I started, and will be 51 when I graduate in March! I've been in the medical field my entire working life as a certified medical assistant and I decided I may as well get paid for my knowldge. I'm the oldest in my class, but have found that others have come to respect me and come to me with their questions and problems, and I've "adopted" them all, ha! :chuckle If it's something you really want to do, don't let your biological age stop you or intimidate you--you've got something all those 20-something's dont have, maturity; and no amount of schooling can give it to them:yeah:!!!!!

Like you, I waited until late in life to go to nursing school. I started two and a half years ago at age 46! I am now two weeks away from completing my first semester of junior year at Lynchburg College. Three semesters left! I began in the Fall of 2006, going to college for the very first time in my life. I will graduate with a BSN in May, 2010. It's tough curriculum, but well worth the pain. It's also rough going to college after being out of high school for 30 years now, but also well worth it. Everyone has treated me very well and like another one of the "girls". I've experienced some wonderful professors, some valuable experiences, and made some fabulous friends.

I say to you...it's never too late! Go for it! You'll be glad you did.

Well you sure have enough responses but another one cant hurt lol i was 43 when i graduated and passed my boards i think it is so rewarding at this age I wanted it so bad i could taste it ! You are never to old as far as im concerned its just a number I wish you the best of luck

HI

I just had a daughter turn 45-I'm 64 and started nursing school last Feb.-I'll be close to 65 when I take the NCLEX-PN-Do I think your too old-never-I shock people with my age-It's so rewarding and -

Go for it

I am 46 and started my pre-reqs last fall.....I can't wait till the actual nursing program begins....good luck to you!

I am 41 and have applied for the RN program for next Sept. I am taking my sciences right now. Not sure about all schools, but the one I have applied to, you need your High School Bio & Chem in the past 10 years before you can be accepted into nursing.

I am really enjoying being in school, my youngest is in grade 11 and my other 2 have graduated and moved out.

I am really glad I have made this decision for my future, good luck!:yeah:

I can't personally relate to this question; however, my best study partner is 53 years old and is back in college. She has six children and she is the sheriff's wife. She is awesome. Her hardest struggle has been Algebra. Over the years schools have begun teaching much more advanced math starting in high school, so she is struggling. Nearly every girl in my class is drawn to my friend (Bonnie). She has taken on the "motherly" role to all of us and I can't tell you how much it means to me. She brings in food when she knows we have all been vegging out of vending machines the entire day. I admire you and her for attending school at an older age. I think you have an advantage over many other students. Life experiences are something that can't be taught in a classroom. You are going to be able to relate so much more, and probably (since you have children) be familiar with many things (like common illnesses) that are to be taught! Good luck to you.

I think it's great that you want to go to Nursing School - always remember that Nursing is a profession where life experience counts. The older you are, the more mature experience you bring to your patients and coworkers and you may have a deeper understanding of life having experienced so much life before Nursing school.

Also I see that young nurses desperately need mature Nursing role models.

I wish you the best - it can be tough but I believe it takes 99% willingness and plain old perseverance. :yeah:
