Has anyone else starting nursing school at the age of 45 or so? My youngest will be a senior in high school next year and my other two in college. I have waited a long time to go back to school. I wanted to know if others have gone back in mid life.

I graduated in '06 at age 46 after 2 years in the ADN program. It was tough, the work is tougher, but you CAN do it. The great majority of our class was considered non-traditional students, mostly in their 30's, a couple fresh out of high school, but the ones aged late 30s to mid-50s did best. I didn't make great grades, I studied alot but didn't kill myself, made high Cs most of the time, which was fine with me. I passed NCLEX first time which most of our class did. Good luck to you.
What's that saying, how old would you be if you didn't become a nurse? Now how old would you be if you became a nurse? Something like that. The only thing, and I don't want to rain on your parade, is that I am 54, and now diabetic, and I have to pick something less crazy than med-surg so I can check my b.s. Still nursing, but my Med-Surg days are over, because they were crazy and you were lucky to get a pee break. I don't have to tell you la dee da la dee da, about how crazy and the work is, and if I wasn't diabetic, I would go back into Med-Surg, because that is what I know and love. Congrats, and you men and women should be proud. YEH!
I wish I had pursued my medical career at an earlier age, that's what I am saying. And I am newly diagnosed with MS, too, but that is not going to stop me.
Sorry to hear that. It would definitely have been a lot easier to pull those 12 hr shifts at 26 instead of 46 and we could be retired by now!!! I didn't have kids but was busy doing other things and it didn't occur to me that I would get into my 30s and 40s and wish I had utilized some of my potential instead of just having fun.
mern08,thanks for posting the name of your school
and I'm obviously being a pain, (again)
but please, when you reply to something like this would you mind also saying what school you're attending?
it would be helpful to me because I'm sure some schools probably don't accept applicants over a certain age, even though they would never admit that's the reason
so it would be helpful to have a list of schools that are known do accept us older folks
I'm currently 46, turning 47 in a week, plan on applying next year
I don't know where you are located, but I haven't heard of any schools that have an age limit - especially nursing - if you have the grades, etc.

I returned to school when I was forty. I had a mission and the focus to complete it. 3 years resulted in my RN and a BA from Teachers College.

check to see if any schools have an evening program. I go at night starting at 5pm. This way you can be home during the day with the younger children. It is not easy to manage but if you really want it, you will make it happen.
