I have a new grandbaby 24 hrs old with congenital pneumonia. I am in the states, he is in the UK.

Getting messages from my son which are very concerning to me. Last message:- "platelets gone down. Inflammatory levels gone up. New labs just drawn to see if it's worsening. Also want to do a lumber puncture. Might happen later tonight depending on staff...if specialist is available "

Your impressions please !

Baby started grunting soon after birth. Is not on IV fluids. Has IV access in arm. Is on antibiotics. ( don't know what abx) Trying to breastfeed. Not latching well.....appears lethargic ( son describes him as gelled and quiet ) baby is with mom in the room. Mom is pumping colostrum. Baby goes to neonatal unit prn for labs.

i am a L&D Nurse. Don't know too much about NICU.

Please comment.

I'm very sorry for your new grandchild's difficulties upon entering this world But as per the site ToS we all agreed to we cannot ask for nor offer medical advice.

You can try your local hospital's NICU website or the March of Dimes to seek more information.

Best wishes for a full recovery

I'm so sorry your grandson is sick.....it's got to be hard. You're here, he's there and there isn't much to do but wait and worry.

Would it be possible to arrange a Skype meeting between you, your family in the UK, and your grandson's care providers? That might help calm some of your worries and get your questions answered directly from the source. All we can do here is speculate, and not only is that against the terms of service we signed on to here, it won't get you any closer to an answer.

It's great that mama is pumping colostrum....a great, irreplaceable gift she's giving her baby! Good on her!

I'm a nursery nurse who attends deliveries and occasionally floats to NICU....my prayers, best thoughts, and sincere wishes for a speedy recovery are with you all.

Yes, this definitely has to be very hard on you being so far away.

You've been given some great advice especially what Elvish said about using Skype.

Per TOS, we just cannot give you the advice you seek.

We sincerely hope that your grandson can overcome all problems and be well.
