Confusing chem test question, trying to see if I got it right

Published

"Compare a small pot of water that is boiling vigorously to a large pot of water that is boiling gently. Which statement is true?"

1. Pots are boiling at same temperature

2. Small pot is boiling at higher temp than large pot

3. Vapor pressure of liquid is greater than pressure above pot in each case

4. Large pot is boiling at a higher temp than small pot

5. More heat is required to evaporate one mole of water from the smaller pot than from the larger pot.

Thoughts?????

What do you think? I can tell you it is not 5.

I said 3 because I didn't think I could conclusively say that they were boiling at the exact same temp, but the more I think about it, that one was probably right. Darn.

The question is - Is vapor pressure of boiling liquid greater than pressure above pot?

It's 1. The boiling point is the same for both. I would have taken pressure into account if they had said something about being covered. If the pressure is high then the volume of the gas goes down. If the pressure goes down the volume of gas is higher.

I'd say 1. Boiling temp for water is 100C from start until it's all gas.

i am 100% sure the right answer is

Both pots are boiling at the same temperature.

Since the original question was from December 2012 I'm guessing the OP is done with the class by now. ;)

I would have asked the instructor if both pots are at same elevation. If at same elevation then 1 is definitely true.

Ooops. I think the tea is ready.
