Q....The clients VS are T103 F orally: pulse 92 bpm: resp 24 bpm: & B/P 124/76. The client is treated for the temp. & the temp falls to 98. Which of the followng resp. rates should the nurse anticipate as part of the response of the body to the change in client status?
1) 18
2) 26
3) 28
4) 30
I picked #1 18 bpm. My rationale...w/rise in temp resp goes up. Fall in temp resp goes down.
Saunders says the answer is # 4. Rationale..Elevations in body temp cause a corresponding increase in resp rate. The increase occurs because the metabolic needs of the body increase with fever, requiring more oxygen. The client who has a decrease in body temp will experience a decrease in resp. rate.
Is that not what I said????Temp is down so resp would decrease not increase???? What am I missing??? thanks

Typo- I too picked A.
Sometimes books have typos in them- it throws you off until you realize that the book is wrong, and not you.

But maybe what they are saying is the body still needs a lot of oxygen to even bring the temp done to 98 so thats why its 4

Assuming the change in status in the stem is referring to the DECREASED temp, then I would agree with you that it is A. If they are referring to the change in status as the initial, increased temp, then D is correct. Try not to fret too much about the question itself. You obviously understand the rationale and that is what is important. It's not that great a question, honestly.
And by the way, I am sure someone will mention it eventually, but the questions are copyrighted material and you're not supposed to post them. Just ask in generalities.

i also got confused when i answered that question. so i presumed its a typo. error. i can't forget the rationale reg. the rising of temp. and respi. bec. i got a wrong ans. when i encountered similar question. so it think the correct ans. is 18
