hello everyone! i finally decided to purchase a computer. i love using my webtv, but it is limited to linking on certain sites, etc.

i have looked at some, but there are many to choose from.

what kind (brand) do you have or suggest. i know it depends on the price and the features, but just wanted some hints, advice, etc.

any suggestions. thanks in advance!

i bought a laptop. it is just as powerful as my desktop. it is also portable, which allows me to be able to do papers and homework anywhere. yes it is more expensive but worth the money if your always on the go.

i have never thought about a lab top since my children will be needing to have usage to a computer. it would be ideal if it was just me. thanks for your reply!

let's see here...two laptops, both really old and some off brand name that i can't remember (cheap as hell, use them to carry around docs that are too bulky in paper); one highly modified gateway, three years old, don't think it has a single part in it that's original except the hard drive and the modem; a hewlitt packard that's collecting dust because we don't have a purpose for it as of this moment; a brand spanking new emachine that boyo just acquired and is now lording over me for it's exceptional speed and blah and blah; two hybrids that we built ourselves that we use on and off, depending on the hows and whys. as you can see, i am a bit of an addict here. the point is, it doesn't so much matter what computer you buy as what you do with it. any computer can be fixed or modified to your liking, and it's not at all difficult to learn how to do this sort of thing by yourself. it's much cheaper to buy a basic system, like a cheap emachine, compaq, or hp and add to it later. what will you be using it for? you can get by writing papers and surfing this board on a bare bones 486 running windoze 3.1...if your a gamer, it's a lot more money. so what do you need it for?

indeed.

i am getting one so when my children or i have to do reports, we can do this at home instead of going to the library. the children have games and can't play them any more becasue of not having one. there are some things i can not do with the unit i have and a computer will surfice with this and other needs as well.

thanks for replying, indeed![color]

we have a dell. love that steven!

hummm, another vote for a "dell". thanks for sharing, shygirl!

i have extensive knowledge and experience with computers. research what you need and the features of each. as far as name brands go look at gateway and dell. avoid compaq and e-machines at all cost they are hard to upgrade often unable to upgrade at all. i recommend going to a reputable computer shop and having one custom built to meet your needs.

Ah, computers...........we went through puter hades when we first started out.

Got an old one (IBM) from a friend, fought for months to make it surfable, then bought parts and put one together our selves (with bro-in-laws help), then, after more hades, bought a new one from tv (again, unknown brand).......had that one for 6 months and it was down for 5 1/2. Finally bought a Dell............Voila`

Now we have 2 Dells, and one older 486 for the kids.

We love the Dells, never had a problem that wasn't solved through excellent tech support. All the hardware has served us well, no crashes with Windows. Our oldest if 4 1/2 years old, and still working beautifully.

Good luck in your purchase, and very wise to be requesting info BEFORE purchasing :)

I bought my Gateway a couple of years ago and haven't had any problems.

I bought it because:

1.Gateway's reputation at the time

2. AMD Athlon chip (Dell didn't have a model with the Athlon chip and Intel was being raked over the coals for manufacturing Pentiums that recorded your information)

3. Big monitor (21 inches)

4. Speed, memory, etc. - all that other misc techno stuff :D

Good luck in your research! :)

Check out the deals at Costco or Sam's Club (if you have on near you!) My husband (an engineer) says they have some pretty good deals there. I'm not sure if they have Dell but you can check!

Good luck,

Marci

Oh by the way, we have a Tiger by Systemax.:)

I had to comment on the post about the monitor.....I also have a 21 inch monitor and I love my big screen.....in fact I have a hard time at the little ones and it was worth the extra money for me........we bought a hewlett packard from a pawn shop for the kids and it has done well for them for their games and such.....
