completely freaked out by nursing students

Published

I was in an internet cafe today trying to study and a couple of nursing students, quite a bit younger than I, were chatting quite loudly about patho. There is no way I could help but hear them. They were so loud, I could not concentrate on my work. I say all that to say, there was no way I could avoid hearing what they were talking about. Anyway, one of them was clearly the lead of the duo for their study session. She kept going on and on in a really fast fashion about a particular disease process' viral counts and modes of aquiring this particular virus, and it was totally freaking me out. Not the disease process itself. It was the fervor and pace that she was keeping. She would momentarily break from what she was saying and make an observation about what she was saying and the other student would comment also. I looked up at one point and realized she was reading from a power point but it didn't really make me feel much better. I felt completely inferior. I've been trying to tell myself that she was only able to spit that info. out like that because she was reading from a power point but it sounded like she had complete confidence (I mean like 100%) in what she was reading. It just really made me doubt myself and I don't really know why.

Please understand that most new students are unsure if they will be sucessful in nursing school. That girl who was confidently spewing forth what seemed to be vast amounts of knowledge had to begin somewhere, and I'm willing to bet it was right where you are.

You will get there. Knowledge builds on itself one layer at a time.

I agree with EJM. I know someone who graduated top of class in a nursing program had trouble finding a job. Why? because she was book smart, she always aced her tests. But when she got out of the real world, she had trouble landing interviews, she couldn't apply what she learned to the real world and struggled to keep her job now. I mean really.....give yourself a break. I am between A and B average and I can tell you that I could probably do better in the real setting than on the test. That's just me! LOL!

I agree with both EJM and tokidokifantasy also you got to realize to her 100% confidence could have just been an act, she was reading a power point as you stated, maybe she was just reading confidently. Either way don't worry about other nursing students, you can do it, just cause someone seems smarter or better at something doesn't always mean they are and if they are you can always ask for help beacause I can promise you someone helped them get that way too. Never doubt yourself, cause if you doubt yourself you may start to believe it and cause it to happen, never let anything make you doubt yourself.

ROFL

In my first nursing class, I had a couple of retakes in my class that failed the course by only a point or two; and in the beginning of the semester, they were speaking just like that. I could only help to think, "Wow - they failed the course and they seem to know what they are doing. I'm so going to fail the class"

By the end of the semester, they were going to me for some answers and I was speaking just like them. On test days, it's worse - on these days, the knowledge that just spews out of any serious nursing student is just ridiculous while they are preparing for tests.

I was in the same exact boat and that's how I speak when I'm talking about nursing stuff.

And you too, one day, will speak like that as well. =D

Don't let insecurity get the best of you - you got this!

Thank you all for the perspective. I hope to have that kind of confidence some day. It is just beyond me that I could ever know that was going on in that conversation about 1 disease. She basically spent a good 40 minutes in rapid fire about 1 disease. Hopefully, I'll get there.

One day you will be don't worry, like i said never doubt yourself. It takes time and practice. And one day you will be sitting at a internet cafe scaring other nursing students by the vast information that you kow well talking to friends or other students.
