Commute from NJ

Published

I live in Northern NJ and would like to enter into an Accelerated BSN program. (I already hold a Bachelors of Science in Long Term Care Administration.)

I'm not too familiar with where the schools are in NY to even begin my search. What schools offer a good quality program and would be an easy commute from NJ?

Thanks!

Where in northern NJ?

Wherever you are you'll need to get to NJ Transit for the train - buses sit at the tunnels for hours - and then switch to the PATH in Hoboken or Jersey City.

Wayne, which is in Passaic County

Thanks for the info - good to know about the buses. As for the train to the PATH option - do you know of any schools that offer the Accelerated BSN program?

NYU, Pace, SUNY Downstate, Columbia, Molloy

The "hours" is a bit of an exaggeration, but be forewarned that there is no such thing as an easy commute into the city.

Oh, and I don't know about schools.

Since you already live in NJ and therefore qualify for NJ resident tuition rates, why not look into UMDNJ's aBSN program? They're in Newark, where NJ transit reaches easily and UMDNJ provides a free shuttle to and from Newark Penn Station. The tuition is also MUCH cheaper.

yep, i would look into Rutgers newark program...not only will you be stuck with out of state tuition if you look in NYC, but you will also be stuck in traffic. You're better off driving yourself to a NJ school. I'd only look in NYC if i had a lot of money and lots of time ;)

Thanks for the info - I had wanted to check into NY schools because of the negative feedback I've gotten re: UMDNJ's Accelerated Program. That being said, I have applied there and am now just waiting to hear their determination. I will check into Rutgers at Newark, though - I hadn't spoken to them yet, so it's definitly worth some time.

Coming from that program, I can tell you that your education and preparation will become what you make it. UMDNJ has prepared me well in the theory and science department but not as well in the art of clinical practice. I think this is applicable to the majority of aBSN programs. It seems that the ADN and Diploma programs have their students more well prepared in clinical practice and are able to transition better from school to work.

In my opinion, the BIGGER goal of nursing school is to become well prepared for the NCLEX and pass. You can know everything and be a superb clinician but that can all mean nothing of you don't pass the NCLEX.
