Could anyone here please explain to me Community College of Philadelphia's point system and how you get points for ranking? I've visited the website and am still slightly confused . I am thinking of transferring there from another institution and was wondering if I had a good chance of getting in...so tired of waiting lists!! I also was curious to know what GPA they use for ranking...if I am a transfer student will they use my cumulative GPA from my other institution or will they calculate a GPA regarding the courses they use for the program. As of right now I dont have atleast a 2.75 at my school...does that mean I dont have a chance ? Any information will be greatly appreciated...thanks a bunch!! :redbeathe

Ms.Ambitious, the way it works basically is this: CCP has a point system for accepting applicants to the nursing program. The highest number of points possible is 9 points, added up from a total of 3 possible points in each of 3 categories: your GPA, your academic standing, and your score on the Allied Health test. A GPA of, I think, 3.5-4.0 will get you 3 points for the GPA category; academic good standing, w/o any withdrawals or incompletes, will give you 3 points in that category, and an Allied Health test score of 21-30 points will yield 3 points in that category. Lower GPA or AHT scores may get you only 2 points, or one point for those categories, or, if you have withdrawals or incompletes, you may only get 2 or 1 point. Say you had a GPA of 3.0, you got a 19 on the Allied Health test, and were in good academic standing, you would have 7 points: 2 points for your 3.0 GPA, 2 pts for you AHT score, and 3 points for being in good academic standing. CCP's nursing program, I was told, accepts people with 9, 8, or 7 points. I believe you do have to have a GPA of 2.75 to qualify for the program, though.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Is it possible for you to take some classes at CCP this summer or even in the fall? If you take at least 12 credits at CCP (at least one of the classes has to be a science) then you can apply for the nursing program as a CCP student and they will go soley by your CCP gpa regardless of what your gpa was at other schools. I have a BA from Temple, but I took some additional classes at CCP and they only looked at my CCP classes which benefited me A LOT. I will be starting the program this fall.
That is great, I'm starting CCP's RN program in Fall too!! (unless I get in Penn )!!

OP if your GPa is less than 2.75, this might be the way to go. From my prior degree, with my GPA of 2.8 plus more than 1 withdrawal, I would have been able to get a maximum of 5 points and would have been automatically rejected from the program. With 12 credits at CCP and a good GPA with no Ws, I was able to get 9 points. I ended up going elsewhere.
We were told in our information session that they accept all 9s, usually all 8s (depending on how your competitors score), and often some 7s. So you really want to get as many points as possible.

I am also in a similar situation , more than 1 withdrawal at other schools, bringing my gpa below 2.75. I am seriously considering taking the pre-reqs at CCP and crossing my fingers that once I do that I can be considered for the nursing program there or at Roxborough. My prior academic history is not in nursing but business which I can't stand.
I was wondering which classes you took at CCP and which program did you go with? Also any other pointers?
Thanks!
Hi All,
Well, CCP is where I'll be in Sept!
Serious: right, they look at your CCP GPA, not your prior GPA. I have a friend whose GPA from Temple was lower, but she came to CCP for her nursing prereqs, and earned a GPA here of 4.0, and now is trying to decide whether she wants to attend CCP nursing or Jeff, she was accepted to both.
I had to start w/math 016, two years ago, I kid you not. It took me 2 years at CCP to complete all my nursing prereqs, and they ALL are done. Now I only have to do the last 28 credits of nursing courses.
My big concern is with financial aid: if each semester of nursing coursework/clinicals counts as only 7 credits, that will mean I am only a what, halftime student? Which means I will only qualify for a halftime Pell grant award which will not cover the entire tuition. Which means: balance I must pay out of pocket, ON TOP of the almost 2K which has to be found to pay for all the essentials to begin the program. Hmmmmm........
Anyone going for the NSP scholarship? You must be full time to have a good shot at getting it....so what, I'd have to take on another 5 credits in order to qualify?
Zephyr: Tnx for the quick reply!!! Got discouraged when CCP told me I have to send all my college transcripts (ugh-embarrassing to look at) and apply as a transfer before taking classes there. I asked CCP about low gpa's and wanting to take nursing pre-reqs and they told me that's why they need the transcripts, so they'll know where to place me. I was also told I may have to take a test after they review the transcripts. So I began thinking why go through all this with the risk of having a low cumulative GPA...but after reading the posts on here I see that there is still hope for me and ppl in my situation. So off to Community College I go.
Re:your friend who went in from Temple, were they able to transfer in any of their prior credits?
Also, how has your experience at CCP been? Do you do weekend, day or night courses? I'm trying to get as much info as possible before I apply. I want to be absolutely sure I can be 100% committed.

I took anatomy and physiology, chemistry, micro, sociology, psychology, math, statistics, and nutrition at ccp and then went to drexel. As long as you take enough credits at ccp and do well you should have a good shot at getting in.
Thanks HiddenCat! I'll have to take all those pre-reqs too (minus Sociology, I think, since I took it somewhere else). Did you need to transfer any of your Temple credits to CCP?
I was looking at the Drexel BSN program -that's what my little heart desires but baby steps...hopefully I can get there from CCP

I am not the person who went to temple. I had a previous degree so got out of Eng 101/102 on that basis.
I graduated from Temple and had no problem transferring my Temple credits to CCP. There is a credit evaluation form CCP has you fill out and then they do an evaluation and tell you which classes from your old school will transfer and what the CCP equivalent of that class is.
