Columbia University MDE 2017

Published

Hi everyone!

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who has been accepted into the next starting cohort for this program! :D

I am starting this super early because I have already begun to freak out lol.

Is anyone applying for the MDE MDE/DNP or MDE/PHD program for 2017?

This is my dream program !!

I am prepping for the GRE at this point which I am taking in August. It has been a long arduous road for me to say the least and I am ready to send my app off with a prayer. Any advice from current/previous students of this program or applicants welcome! And to my fellow applicants what other programs are you applying to? And most importantly good luck to everyone. The application opens August of 2016 :D

is there a due date to turn in the mid-term grades?

I believe the email they sent said January 9th was the last day to submit updated grades and resumes.

Hey everyone. I just submitted my FAFSA and filed it as an independent since that's what Columbia said to do. I have never worked and therefore never filed taxes. But because I still live with my mom I went ahead and provided her tax information. I'm super stressed about filing as an independent because there are some programs that I'm applying to (as I'm sure you guys are too) that are BSN/MSN programs. Am I still considered a dependent for the BSN portion of those programs because it's an undergraduate degree? I feel like my FAFSA is wrong (??) and it might affect my financial aid for several programs. This is so stressful!

I just submitted my FAFSA as well! First time applying independent as well but I had to since I will have a Bachelor's degree this May. I was nervous too but I believe you filed correctly because I filed the same way. Unfortunately we won't get aid in the form of grants, just loans now even if it's a BSN Second Degree program because you already one undergraduate degree.

I would definitely contact their admissions officer for all of those statistics. They do say that they take a holistic view of the applicant, as well. So, it is very similar to Columbia, in that respect. You have to have at least a B for all pre-reqs. I have a Master's degree, so I'm not sure about the GRE, since I don't have to take it. The staff there is great. I really enjoyed meeting all of them, so I would say that was my favorite thing about the program. They also seem to have a lot of global opportunities, which it something I am very interested in. The area around the nursing school and hospital is a little rough in my opinion, and just for some context, I live in Detroit.

PM me if you have anymore questions :)

Hi all! Happy New YearI! This is our year guys. We are all going to make excellent nurses, and help patients when they are most vulnerable. I am as equally excited and nervous to hear back from Columbia as many of you. I stumbled across a website called Sincerely Meagan . Its a website by a current mde 2016 student. I have been reading about her different experiences as a mde student, and she has been incredibly insightful on what to expect. If you do a quick google search and type in "Columbia mde" you will find her site. I love learning about the different opportunities Columbia has to offer. Columbia is my first choice. I didn't graduate from an Ivy league school, but I did take a graduate class at an Ivy league school and I have a 4.0 for the pre-requisites. I am sure the admission committee takes a holistic view of each applicant, so I am hoping for the best outcome. Lastly, I live close to Columbia's Presbyterian Hospital and I must say that you might fall in love with the Presbyterian Children Hospital. I volunteered at the Children Hospital, and met some amazing nurses and little kids with the most admirable resilience. The staff and ambiance at Morgan Stanley Presbyterian Children Hospital of New York will make you feel like Columbia University is the best nursing school to attend because someday you might just get to complete a clinical rotation at Morgan Stanley. Good luck to all!

Thanks for telling us about that blog, Bhealthwh -- good luck to you in your last weeks of waiting! (AUGH! TELL US ALREADY!!!)

Some takeaways: 19 hours in ten weeks. Wow! And I found it interesting to read about her clinical rotation thoughts. I also liked reading that there are some breaks from school. I had been imagining that it was literally non-stop. Glad there are holidays. :)

You live in Washington Heights? I live just a bit north of you in the Hudson Heights area. I've spent quite a bit of time around the area, and closer to the hospital too. It's always pretty crowded, and so I always feel very safe. There are great options for groceries, food, drinks, public transportation. I love the noisy, vibrant neighborhood!

Good luck ! Hopefully we will all see each other vey soon

Absolutely! The more we share useful information the better. Things may change for the second cohort (we should probably count on a few changes), but at least we can learn a few things from a student who is part of the first cohort. Btw, I do live in Washington Heights so we are technically neighbors (Hello!) 😊

Hello neighbor! Hopefully we will both be walking to school, come June. Fingers crossed!

Yes fingers and toes crossed...all 20 phalanges crossed :D Visualize that! (Some Anatomy humor to keep my mind sane during this waiting period). All the best!

This waiting period is killing me . I can not wait for that day but at the same time will faint before opening my email
