Columbia University ETP 2011

U.S.A. New York

Published

Thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread for prospective applicants to Columbia's ETP program starting Summer 2011. I was going to apply last year but passed on it in favor of working for another year.

Applications are due November 15, 2010! Right around the corner ...

Anyone else preparing for this also? :clown:

Hi hskwon, thank you so much for helping me answer my question. It is great to hear from someone who is in the program. If you don't mind, may I also ask how much emphasis admissions puts on recommendation letters? And do the faculty read an entire application? Or do they only give feedback on the essays and someone else reads the rec letters and resumes?

My last question is- Is there any apparent advantage for handing in the application early? I'm applying early decision and the deadline is Oct 14th. Will it serve me well to hand it in say this week?

Thanks so much for your help. It is a stressful time and your feedbacks make a HUGE difference!! THANKs again!

No prob. I am not sure how much recs are emphasized, but at least 2 nursing professors read your essay. I'm not sure if they read the whole app. The school didn't offer early decision last year, so unfortunately I can't help you regarding that.

To weave in some of the concerns of the poster above you (barbiemafia), I really do believe that Columbia looks at the applicant holistically. I personally think the essay is significant, as the school doesn't hold any interviews.

If it helps to see some numbers, I had a 3.5 GPA from undergrad, 4.0 in pre-reqs and 1190 GRE. I majored in photojournalism (ie: did not study science) and spent 4 years working with low-income youth. I think it was my essay, which described how these kids inspired me to change careers, that helped the school understand why I wanted to enter its Pediatric NP program.

Columbia gets applicants from all walks of life, and they realize this. I don't think they have a formula of the perfect applicant by any means.

Hope this helps and good luck on the application process. :)

Thanks so much!!

Does anyone know how competetive the Adult Nurse Practitioner specializing in Palliative and End of Life Care is compared to some other areas of specialty for a male? Just curious.

Thank you everyone for contributing to this forum. For us prospective applicants, this is certainly a lifeline!

To Bariemafia's post, I think you will be just fine. It is completely natural to be nervous about your stats. From most of the current students, it seems that the admission committee puts great emphasis on who you are as a person and the qualities that will make you a successful nurse. In case anyone is wondering, here my numbers:

GPA: 3.4

Pre-req GPA: 4.0

I started an education company

I am a CNA and EMT

Was a music producer in Atlanta. :)

I'm sure you will be fine. I am just as nervous as anyone. I will submit everything within 2 days. Like the song say:

This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill

Fifteen percent concentrated power of will

Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain

And 100% reason to remember the name.

:) Looking forward to keep interacting with everyone on this forum.

I was also accepted to ETP last year. I'd say don't change the margins -- say what you need to say as concisely and clearly as possible. You guys sound like you're all within range of the stats they look for. I think essays and recs are particularly important, GRE not quite so much. It's my feeling that they want to see what you as a person will bring to nursing. They will definitely look at your whole application -- they want to get the best sense of you that they can since they don't interview. If you haven't already, you should start a 2012 applicant thread.

I want to start an ETP 2012 forum. How do I go about doing it? Anyone know?

You are submitting everything in 2 days? I thought applications for the fall 2012 program weren't due until the spring....?

I'm applying early decision. Deadline is Oct 14th. Everything is in from my end. Now waiting to hear back that my application is complete.
