Columbia SON MDE 2019

Updated:   Published

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to start this thread for those who are all applying to the Columbia School of Nursing MDE program for 2019 Entry.

I figured we could all share our thoughts/ questions/ concerns here, or just use this to meet some new people ?

My name is Gurdeep, I'm from NY, and I'm a recent Grad from Binghamton University. Looking forward to meeting all of you ?

Thanks! You make some great points. I have seen that community colleges very often have high nclex pass rates. But like you said, while their programs prepare them strictly for the NCLEX, cuson’s has many additional courses required to complete a master’s degree. Also, with many students beginning a DNP immediately after the MDE I’m assuming this means they have to take the test while enrolled in school. My understanding is that most new grads will take some time off to focus on studying. Because we are transitioning right into doctoral study we forfeit the luxury of having that dedicated time and must juggle it with classes.

I don’t think the score is necessarily indicative of the quality of the program but I do believe some changes need to be made to circumvent these issues.

These are great points. Also, you won't take the NCLEX when classes are in session. Most of the students study during their 3 week furlough after graduation in May, study throughout the short summer semester, and take it after the program ends in August. There's about a 3 week break after before you begin the DNP.

Oh I didn’t even know about that I was just guessing. But I do wish they switched the nclex prep course. I consistently hear negative things about it.

Yes, the score is not the only indicator of the quality of a program. But if it asks for a top price, I’d expect a top score. And right now the passing rate is below 90%. That’s one prominent indicator of the quality of the program overall.

Hi everyone! I am still deciding between Columbia's MDE/DNP program and another school's ABSN+MSN program. Does anyone have any insight as to why they may pick one over the other to become a Nurse Practitioner? Columbia's program is significantly more expensive, so I am weighing whether it really makes a difference. Any insight would help!

Hi everyone! I know the enrollment deposit and financial aid acceptance is due today. If we pay the deposit and accept the loans/awards we can still decide not to attend right? We just don’t get the deposit back? If someone could clarify that would be great! ?

Yes, I believe you just lose the deposit.

Hi all,

What were the maximum amounts offered for the merit, need-based, and seamless DNP scholarships?

Thanks!

Congrats and welcome to all those who accepted spots in Columbia's 2019 MDE class! I'm in the class above you guys and will be going into the psych DNP program. As for the maximum scholarship amounts, admin tends to be pretty quiet about that and the recent shortening of the DNP programs will have changed scholarship amounts quite a bit, so you guys will have to share what you find out with each other and to the next class. I recently wrote an article about my experience with MDE/DNP so far: http://connectmindbodypurpose.com/2019/03/11/columbia-mde-dnp-experience/

and I hope some of you might it helpful!

That's right. Columbia recently announced that they will be scrapping the residency program because people could not find jobs in time and employers are not going to pay you a full salary if they know you're still a student. I believe the DNP program will be shorter, but that may mean the seamless scholarship will decrease. We are all unsure of what the changes will be, because things change around here all the time, but be sure to ask questions and get your answers in writing.

Hello everyone! I’m another accepted student ?

I had a question for the current students. I want to continue going to the gym once classes start. From your experience, how is the gym? And what are the hours that it is open?

Thanks!

From what I’ve been told from NPs who finished this program, there is absolutely no time to go to the gym during the mde portion of the program!

And no time to eat or sleep too. That's the price for stuff 74 credits in a one year program instead of two.
