Columbia SON MDE 2019

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to start this thread for those who are all applying to the Columbia School of Nursing MDE program for 2019 Entry.

I figured we could all share our thoughts/ questions/ concerns here, or just use this to meet some new people ?

My name is Gurdeep, I'm from NY, and I'm a recent Grad from Binghamton University. Looking forward to meeting all of you ?

I haven't gotten anything. I have a feeling we will get something in the next two weeks before most Uni's close for winter break. *fingers crossed*

Do you think that under certain circumstances columbia would give some type of early admission? I got accepted into NYU however their semester starts in January but I was told that we wouldn't hear back response from Columbia until February. This puts students like me in a bad situation because you don't want to deny admission to a school to get denied from Columbia. Do you think I should try to call Columbia on this matter?

From my understanding Columbia does not offer Early Admission. They publish all admission decisions at the same time Between January 30- February 15 of the entry year. I am not sure if they make exceptions. I think your best bet is to call and explain your situation. Best of luck :)

Hi everyone! Anyone know what the acceptance rate for MDE is? Also, how detrimental is having a B (rather than an A) for prerequisites like A&P?

This wait is taking forever!!! Do we get another notification on our status update before our decision is posted?

Hi all! I'm applying for the regular MDE (without DNP) and I totally feel you about having the long wait not hearing. This is going on for me too, but I did have one other school that I got a reply from after about 4 months of dead radio silence...so it's unfortunately not abnormal, probably.

Question for any current Columbia MDE students lurking: will Columbia provide any sort of student housing or does pretty much everyone live off campus? If I get in, I'd like to move to New York, but having known people who've moved to New York, there are...issues...I'd like to know if I can avoid.

Hey Clarinurse,

The Columbia SON MDE 2018 forum has a wealth of information from current students talking about housing. It was a huge benefit to me to read it. I hope to get student housing if I get in, I think it would just make my life easier, but if there is no option I heard living in Washington Heights or nearby boroughs is a good possibility.

I hope they send us financial information soon, and information on scholarships!! This wait is killer

Hello Clari,

I am a current MDE/ DNP-FNP student, in response to your question re: housing, yes Columbia Nursing will offer housing if you select that you need it. That said, it will not be offered to everyone, so once you receive your letter, ( offer) you can follow the instructions on how to get on the list. Once accepted, you can either receive campus housing ( the towers 1,2,3 or Bard hall) or many students have chosen to look on the housing advertising list at the campus housing website to see available sublets and roommate advertising off campus. Others after meeting up at visitation day decided to look together and find their own place. Whichever route, I promise that you'll find a place through one of those options. I hope that helps, Best wishes and happy holidays the decisions will be here before you know it! - J.

There is on-campus housing for students enrolled at any of the CUMC campuses. If you are admitted, you will get an email from housing and PLEASE APPLY ASAP. On-campus housing is very difficult to obtain because there are not that many open spots and nursing students get the lowest priority. International students get first priority, then it goes from the furthest state west from NY, etc. If you live in NYC or in the states nearby, you...won't get student housing during the Summer. I believe a third of my cohort live on-campus and most people move out/in at the end of the Summer session.

Does anyone know a)how many applications they received this year for MDE and the FNP-specialty? b)when the admitted students day will be held this year and it's worth traveling to? (fingers crossed!)
