Columbia Presbyterian vs. Mt. Sinai for Pediatrics

Published

Hi Everyone:

Can anyone give me some feedback on a new grad starting out in Pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian or Mount Sinai? I'm graduating in August and want to work in Peds straight away. What types of units are good places for new grads to start?, Do you like the environment?, What are the patient/staff ratios like?, etc. I looked through some of the old posts for information on the pediatrics units at Columbia Presbyterian and Mount Sinai, and the posters there were from 2002-2003, so current information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!!

I know Columbia Presbyterian started a PICU Program for new grads and experienced RNs. I'm not sure about Mt. Sinai and Peds. Good Luck!!!

I, too, would like to hear if Mount Sinai and their new grad programs.

I've heard great things about the PICU internship at Columbia. One of my peds preceptors works up there, and she was really encouraging the peds folks in my clinical group to apply. I was on a sort-of unofficial cardiac/neuro step down at CHONY (Columbia's peds hospital, formerly known as Babies) for my peds clinical, and I loved it. The nurses were great, the docs were friendly, etc. Like, if a nurse was walking by a room with an alarming IV pump, she'd just go in and take care of it! Not go find the nurse assigned to that room! So fantastic. I don't know anything about Mt Sinai, but I'm starting my OB clinical there next week, so I could give a general impression rather than anything specific to peds.

Hi Elizabells!

Thanks for the information about Columbia. I continue to hear great things about their program. My Peds instructor said good things about Columbia and Mount Sinai, but I would like to hear from additional people about Sinai's program. Please let us know what you hear about Mout Sinai when you do your rotation there!!

Aw, nuts. I just got an email that they've canceled the Sinai rotation, and now I'll be at Allen. I wouldn't necessarily think that's a problem with Sinai, though. The preceptor may have backed out or something.
