Columbia ETP 2016

Published

Hello!

I know this is a bit early, but I'm planning to apply to the apply to the Columbia Entry to Practice Program (among a few others) this fall. I've seen similar forums for past application periods, and thought it might be nice to get one started so we can start to bounce ideas and questions off each other.

Has anyone been to an open house? Any information worth sharing?

Just got back from the info session on the 14th- for anybody who was there I was the one in the red jacket up towards the front of the room.

I did ask about the residency portion of the DNP and didn't get a whole lot of information- except that the DNP is structured to include 2 years of coursework and a 1 year residency in their specialty, and students find their residency placements themselves.

I got the impression that because the 2016 cohort will be the first class of this program they are still ironing things out a bit, especially with the doctoral portions of the program.

I felt like most of the information they covered was available on the website, but it was helpful to get to see the nursing school campus, and ask some direct questions. I've also found that at this point the admissions team is very responsive to emails, so if you have specific questions I'd definitely suggest sending them a quick email: [email protected]

Thanks for asking that question about the residency, that's the impression that I got from them when I went to the info session. That sucks though that we would have to find our own placement for residency...

I wonder if it is like finding a job basically bc they said it was paid.

What other schools are you guys looking at applying to? Columbia is my top choice but i'm looking at Yale, Mass General, stony brook's absn and a couple more.

Hi all,

I am a little confused about filling out the prerequisite courses on the application for MDE/DNP application. Are these the courses we should have filled out:

ETP - English Writing/Composition

ETP - Human Anatomy

ETP - Human Physiology

ETP - Microbiology

ETP - Nutrition

ETP - Psychology

ETP and MSN - Statistics

Please correct me if I am wrong! Thanks, y'all!

Hey everyone- been focusing on my UCSF app and now I'm moving on to Columbia. I'm still a bit confused by the whole process as well. As for the pre-reqs, I emailed them and they did tell me that all the pre-reqs listed for ETP on the app are the same for MDE, so those are the ones you need to add on your application. So, basically what I gathered from reading this thread is that if you're applying to MDE/DNP you're applying to two programs technically? So, does this mean you can get into the MDE but not the DNP and have to apply to the DNP at a later time? Or does this mean that if you don't get in to MDE/DNP you don't get in period? I'm still confused by this whole process, and it almost seems as though admissions themselves aren't really sure how this is going to pan out! I'm applying to MDE/DNP, although like I said I'm not exactly sure what that means as far as getting in :)

welcome to the thread @emara9!

I also just finished the UCSF app too and am now turning my attention to Columbia, and a few others (I actually started this thread and the one for UCSf, so I'm happy to see you're here too!)

Yes, from what I gather the pre reqs are the same, and I think you have the right idea about the program/application process.

From what's on the website and the info session. here's what Columbia has said...

If you're applying to the MDE/DNP you are applying to two programs, and the admissions group will treat your application that way. If you're applying to the MDE/DNP there are three possible outcomes:

1) Accepted to MDE portion AND accepted to DNP portion.

1.1) You will earn a Master's in nursing in 15 months, and then go straight to earning a DNP

2) Accepted to MDE portion, rejected from DNP portion

2.1) You will earn a Master's in nursing and will need to reapply to the DNP program if you want become a nurse practitioner through Columbia's program

3) Rejected from both

3.1) This is not ideal, and self-explanatory so we won't focus on that.

Thanks so much for that info! Helps a ton :) glad to see you made this thread too!

Quick question- I thought I read that we don't have to send our official GRE scores until we get accepted but now I can't find it anywhere including on the test score page on the application. Do we have to send our official scores, or just type them into the application and send them when they request? Thanks!

Hi! I am applying for Columbia's MDE/DNP program this cycle and I got this off their page in regards to sending official GRE scores --> "Scores must be sent to school code 2142"

I also don't see a section for us to enter our unofficial GRE scores on the application but under the "Tests" tab, we can enter the type of test and the date we took it.

Thank you! Found it under the instructions tab. Good luck!

Hi! I am a nervous wreck and would love to hear about y'all as applicants! I am graduating a semester early (cough cough accelerated?) from a top twenty institution with a science degree. I have a 3.5 cum GPA, ~3.8 for ETP pre-reqs. Taking the GRE in about a week, but will like do 70% in quant, 90% verbal. I went to an open house over a year ago, but obviously things have changed! I do a lot of volunteer work with diverse populations. I have three certs (ekg, phleb, emt) and have a nice amount of clinical and shadowing experience. I also have experience being a patient...long story. I am applying to through the DNP in peds. Obviously there is so much more to my application and my abilities than this list, and I'm sure the same is true of each of you! I was wondering if others would mind sharing where they are at and their "angles", I just feel so lost and have no idea if I'm a viable applicant! Thanks in advance...

Hi everyone, hope you all are in the process of completing the MDE application, as the deadline for the MDE/DNP is on October 16th and the MDE is November 1st. I recently completed mine this past week, all of my 3 recommenders have submitted their letters. I just thought it would be great to put our stats once our application is completed, so that we could update each other on our progress and see how we compare to those who got admitted and those that did not on this forum. Anyways, my stats are 3.6 overall undergraduate gpa, No GRE required because I have a Master's and I have a 3.6 overall as well. Currently taking psychology and A&P1 pre-requisites, will take Statistics, Nutrition, Microbiology, and A&P2 next Winter and Spring semester. I have zero background in health care, so I hope my essay proves sufficient. LOR's came all from my current employer, so I hope that does not affect me negatively, and for what is worth I am a male, so I hope it helps in getting in. I hear it does and I also hear it does not, but we'll see. I also applied to Yale's GEPN program, so I have to take the GRE anyway, which I am taking next week. Well love to hear everyone's stats, and good luck to all!

I'm just about ready to submit my application but going over my personal statement over and over again. Also waiting to get my AW unofficial score for GRE so I can type in those for the application. I am not the best standardized test taker and my VR and QR score together come out to be 301. :/ My overall GPA is also kind of sad at 3.045 but that's from a pretty top tier UC school in CA. I want to say my prerequisite GPA is somewhere near a 3.8 though. I took a lot of the science prereqs at a community college which definitely helped boost my prereq GPA. I believe my letters of rec are pretty strong (one from an old TA, an old psyc professor, and a former employer). I've read in past forums that personal statements can really make a person with low numbers be an ideal candidate, so I've been really trying to perfect that. I have good experiences from the past four years at undergrad which I also hope to give me a leg up. I will be attending the October 9th information session in San Francisco which I am really excited about! If I hear anything interesting and worth sharing with all of you, I will definitely post!

I have a question about uploading an unofficial transcript onto the application- I attended a community college for about half of my undergrad credits, then transferred to a university. The community college has an unofficial transcript online that I was able to save a PDF of and upload, but the university only gives unofficial transcripts to students with financial bars, meaning I can't get one. How would I go about solving this? Did everyone else just scan a copy of the official transcript or were you able to get one from the school? I have an interactive degree audit I can upload which shows my "degree progress" (being 100% since I graduated), classes I took, and overall GPA, but that's it. Any advice would help as I have to do the same for another school I'm applying to!
