Columbia ETP 2016

Published

Hello!

I know this is a bit early, but I'm planning to apply to the apply to the Columbia Entry to Practice Program (among a few others) this fall. I've seen similar forums for past application periods, and thought it might be nice to get one started so we can start to bounce ideas and questions off each other.

Has anyone been to an open house? Any information worth sharing?

Yeah, I got an email saying that. Good luck everyone, I will keep everyone updated with my application progress ;).

Hi all!

I am also applying for the program this year, and planning to take the GRE in a month. I'm crazy nervous, but glad I found this thread. I live in the NYC area and won't be able to move because of personal reasons so Columbia is definitely the most appealing program in the area! What schools are you all applying to? I attended an info session last year, but the program has completely changed since then, so I am looking forward to hearing more information from everyone who hasn't been closed out of the information sessions. I have a strong GPA and volunteer experience but my GRE math is a BIG problem. Haha. Good luck to everyone!!

I'm attending the info session on the 14th. I'm deciding between this program and an Accelerated BSN at a city college. The accelerated BSN is a bargain compared to Columbia, and then I could apply directly for the master's program. I'm very much on the fence, and for family reasons can't attend a program outside of NYC.

I'm also interested to see if they will start a DNP for anesthesia later on.

Hi all!

I am applying to the program as well. I'm attending an info session on August 25.

I am just now looking at the app and I don't see that there is a section for the personal statement. Did anyone else notice that as well?

It's the essay section- it falls right under the academic section and is right above the letters of rec section

Assuming we got accepted, how does everyone plan on supporting themselves while in the program? I know the program itself is covered through loans, but how about housing, food, etc? ? It may seem like an obvious question, but I worked throughout all 4 years of college and managed to pay some of it off while going full time, so it makes me nervous knowing I will not be able to work for at least 15 months.

Hi everyone,

I'm a little confused. I know Columbia transitioned from ETP to the MDE but can you still apply directly to the DNP program with a bachelors in another field...?

On their website I only see the option to apply for the MDE portion and not the DNP initially. I'm a little hesitant about going for the MDE if I don't get accepted directly into the DNP program. Columbia was my #1 school though so I'm having a dilemma. I've worked in the mental health field for a few years and I'm 100% sure psychiatric nurse practitioner it's what I want to do directly out of school.

I know Rochester still has an ETP psychiatric nurse practitioner program, though I've heard Columbia's is better.

When you apply for the MDE you can apply for either the DNP or PhD too.

If you're applying for a doctoral portion, the application deadline is earlier than if you were just applying to the MDE portion.

Yeah, I see it now - I had some of their old pages saved still.

On this page though it seems like they removed their pre-reqs besides stats?

DNP (Post-BS) | School of Nursing

[h=2]Prerequisites

[/h]

  • Must be taken at an accredited college or university (online and community colleges are acceptable).
  • A letter grade of C or better is required.
  • Prerequisites do not have to be completed by the deadline. Rather, all required courses are to be completed by orientation (late May).
    • Statistics taken within the last 5 years
    • Health/Physical Assessment

Never mind, disregard above post - I was looking at the wrong page again.

Just got back from the info session on the 14th- for anybody who was there I was the one in the red jacket up towards the front of the room.

I did ask about the residency portion of the DNP and didn't get a whole lot of information- except that the DNP is structured to include 2 years of coursework and a 1 year residency in their specialty, and students find their residency placements themselves.

I got the impression that because the 2016 cohort will be the first class of this program they are still ironing things out a bit, especially with the doctoral portions of the program.

I felt like most of the information they covered was available on the website, but it was helpful to get to see the nursing school campus, and ask some direct questions. I've also found that at this point the admissions team is very responsive to emails, so if you have specific questions I'd definitely suggest sending them a quick email: [email protected]

Did they say exactly how long the program will be and what is the cost of the program in total. Also, did they talk about what types of loans will be available, since it is a doctoral program I am assuming federal health care career loans and graduate plus loans?
