Columbia ETP Program 2012 entry

Published

Hi,

I plan on applying for the anesthesia program at Columbia and I wanted to know how the background of those that have been accepted look like to see if I'm even competitive enough apply.

Thanks!

I know how you guys feel. For UCSF I had one recommender wait until the day before the app was due, I was biting my nails until she got it submitted.

To my knowledge, all of my recommenders uploaded an official rec letter. I think the short answers alone do not constitute as recommendation. I believe the short questions plus to uploaded document are considered together. Does any one know anything else?

I too am waiting on one final recommendation! Nice to know I'm not the only one having a minor panic attack over here. This has happened with my other schools as well. [sigh]. It's quite frustrating...I feel your anxiety!

As predicted, my last recommender finally came through 12 hours ago. Down to the wire much?!!

Phew.

Ok you ED ETP Applicants, Day 1 is down! Only 50-65 days to go....We can do it!

Haha - I'm not sure I'll get through it if I actually count the days. ;) Plus, when I originally asked Jose about when notifications would be sent, he said "late December/early January" - so I'm thinking it might be more than 65 days until we know...

shoot, I was hoping we would know by early December. Sigh, patience is the most challenging part of this entire process.

Wow, really?! I could have sworn they informed us early to mid Dec. Oh well, guess whatever it is, we are waiting : )

Here is a tweet from CUSON on twitter when asked about ED decisions:

"CUSONAdmissions

Columbia SON @oobaoo Early dec gets you a decision in mid/late Dec, and isnt binding. Doesnt gives higher pref but it does show CUSON is your 1st choice.

11 Oct"

Oooh early to mid-December...that would be nice.

I'm thinking their many different answers may mean "by December 31", in the end.

CUSON is a college like any other, and since the apps are mainly read by faculty members, they'll most likely want to get it taken care of before the holiday vacation. Normal college ED letters arrive on or around the 15th of December, so perhaps CUSON will follow suit. It would also be pretty mean-spirited to send out rejection letters on New Year's Eve!

so i ended up submitting my application hoping that my recommenders would submit the letters at the end..but only one did, one started it but hasnt completed and one just hasn't started it... :/ not sure what to do..i would love to know my decision by december..

I'm so sorry, 2nurse1 - that is so terrible! If I were you I would call the admissions office today (Jose was out of the office last week, and is starting to go through the apps today to check for completeness) and explain the situation. Perhaps they'll let your recommenders submit their letters within a short period after the Oct 14 deadline, or just let you change your application from ED to regular.

You definitely don't want them to just think your ED application isn't complete and not consider you at all - I would call them ASAP to make sure that doesn't happen after all the work you've put in.
