Collin County Community College

Anyone taking nursing classes at CCCC? Anyone out there who went the nursing school there? How is the program? I am thinking about getting my ADN there and I just wanted to get info about their nursing program.

I heard that ~120 app;ied for this fall...40 spots. http://www.ccccd.edu/nursing/selection.html

Their point system is set up so that the 4 prereq's count for alot:

-up to 4 pts for prereq completion

-up to 3 pts for prereq GPA

-up to 3 pts for combined GPA (prereqs and coreqs)

so that's up to 10 points for these 4. I'd try for A's. (10 out of 16? Thats 63%, with the other 6 from the PSB)

And have all your p's and q's in order...I had a friend denied admission (yeah, saw his transcripts) because of the immunization records. ALWAYS save a copy of what you turn in!

There were approx. 361 applicants this year for the fall. I start in the fall and had 15 points with one prereq not done yet. Keep your grades up, and do well on teh PSB. Don't take any flack and don't believe ANY rumors. It's all untrue. :)

Peacelover - which semester are you going to be in this Fall?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this board and interested in CCCC! But I'm a little worried after reading some posts. I'm currently a student at Texas A&M University and have taken all the prereqs required by CCCC here in College Station. It's no walk in the park and I definitely don't have a 4.0 GPA overall. For the prereqs I have B's in A&P 1 and 2, and expecting A's in micro and statistics. I realize they have a point system, but does anyone know if they consider where you took your classes? I'm not saying community college isn't hard, I've taken my share of difficult classes at Blinn, but I'm worried about having a little above a 3.2 at A&M. Anyone have any advice?

Doubtful they take where you took your classes into consideration. Especially if you are asking a community college to say your classes are better than a community college. I don't think they look at all your classes if they are not applicable to the nursing degree when they calculate your overall GPA so that could be higher than a 3.2 if you did well in English, Psychology, and whatever other courses are part of the nursing degree. I think if you do really well on the PSB that works in your favor as well. All you can do is apply and see what happens.

Actually they do take where you took pre-requisites into consideration, in that preference is given to those who take their courses at Collin. That you took classes at A&M is not going to mean anything unless you used them to earn a degree already in another subject. Preference is shown to those who already have a degree as well.

Doing well on the PSB does weigh in very very heavily. GPA is calculated only on those classes that pertain to the nursing degree. However, even with a 3.2 you would not be out of the running for getting accepted. The rumor that one needs a 4.0 to get accepted is not true. Historically speaking there are more applicants to start in the Fall semester than in the Spring, so odds of getting accepted go up when applying for a Spring start date. On average there are 250-350 applicants for around 50 slots. Best of luck!

I'm currently in the Collin nursing program an its a great opportunity. I was accepted into the program with 15 out of 16 points and a 4.0 GPA. But I also had friends with 15 points that did not make it. That's we're I believe GPA plays a big part. So shoot for 15 or 16 points and beef up your GPA. Also try takings some BSN pre-reqs. That seems to strengthen your application.

@Jnickel0 - When did you start the program? You said you had friends with 15 points that were not accepted. Did they know for sure they had 15 points? Do you know the circumstances of why they didn't get accepted such as outside Collin county, support classes not taken, etc? I'm just curious because a friend and I are applying with 15 points for Fall 2012. I have heard our chances are good and that even a few 14s are usually accepted. Waiting is awful!

To say "a few 14s usually get in" is a bit optimistic. Usually 15s and 16s get in. Once in a while a 14 will get in, particularly if they already have another degree or scored very high on the PSB, took their pre-reqs at Collin, have the co-req's already done, etc etc.
