COLLIN COLLEGE FALL 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Hey guys! Who here is applying for the fall 2020 term? Anyone else here unable to take the TEAS due to the cancellations? I signed up for two test dates, both of which were canceled. I see they've updated the process with alternatives put in place for those who were unable to take the TEAS. That being said, it's still super confusing since the admission process is points-based and a major part of the selection criteria is your TEAS scores. I hope this doesn't mean that those who were unable to take the TEAS are not going to be prioritized in the admissions process. ?

Has anyone received an email yet confirming that their application was received?

LOL. Anxiety getting to you? I'm so glad I'm not the only one like that lolol. Also, no. Nobody I know has gotten a confirmation email. Most likely because the application deadline passed after CoB on Friday afyer everyone went home. I don't think they will look at any of the apps until Monday at the least. I wouldn't be suprised if we don't hear from them for a week and a half.

I haven't received any confirmation email yet.

Hahaha, yes!! It’s killing me. Yeah, hopefully they’ll get back to everyone during the weekday!

Ugh, I know. ? wish I got tracking for it because I need to know if they received it! Wine will be my best friend this month lmao. And that is insane!! I did not know it was that arduous of a process.

Did you apply to any other nursing schools? I didn’t and I’m kinda kicking myself for not, but I’m just really set on going to Collin.

Yeah, I applied to other programs (TWU, Brookhaven, Grayson) and have damn near max points in them all, but Collin is my #1 choice. I am really used to Collin's platform, I KNOW they have an amazing reputation and staff, and it is centrally located for me (not to mention I am a Collin employee). Also I graduated Collin's Police Academy so I will feel at home in their nursing school.

Yeah, becoming a cop is pretty rough. The application process for the really high paying police agencies (85K-100K per year) in North Texas are notoriously BRUTAL. The vetting process is super indepth. It starts with a 60 page personal history statement that asks damn near everything you have ever done. You have a TEAS style written exam which ranks all eligible applicants, then you take a physical exam which further ranks you. You then have an initial interview and then a follow up polygraph interview/exam. If you are still in the running at this point, you have to sit for an oral board which consists of 6-8 high ranking officers grilling you about policy and procedures, random scenarios, they asses your critical thinking skills, and grill you about your past indiscretions. If you make it through all of that, you have a final interview with the Chief of Police, a drug screening, and a 6 hour long psychological exam.

The finalists are then ranked and contacted if they have been selected. The entire process takes about 6 months. When I was selected I was the only applicant hired out of a pool of 500. Most police hopefuls for high paying areas usually take 3-5 different application cycles to get hired. It is nuts but is also 100% needed. The higher the agencies pay and standards the lower their instances of police misconduct.

Agreed! I have had friends who’ve attended Collins nursing program, and I’ve always heard great things from them. Plus, I live three minutes away, I could basically walk there. It’s unfortunate that there is a stigma attached to the fact that it is a community college. A coworker of mine told me “I wouldn’t be receiving the same quality of education” there versus a university. My eyes rolled into the back of my head LOL.

Very interesting to know! I’d imagine quite a few candidates probably drop out half way through the vetting process. While that does sound extremely taxing to have to go through, it is a relief to hear that the process is so thorough. Out of curiosity, what made you decide to change career paths?

Btw! I called the nursing department today, and I was told emails will not be sent out confirming the application was received. Essentially, it’s not feasible now because she said there were way too many applicants. I don’t think they will be sending out rejection emails either? She just said you will receive an email 4-6 weeks from the deadline date if you were accepted. I hope this month goes by as quick as possible.

If someone told me that they would be getting a sub-par education at Collin, I most assuredly would let out an involuntary audible groan LOL.

Oh man, the inevitable changing career paths questions LOL! That is a vast and deep can of worms LOL. Essentially, I was tired of politicians impeding my ability to actually help people. That is an overly simplified explanation of an incredibly complex life choice, but is nonetheless the crux of the many personal conflicts that I had.

Mind you, during my career I ascended through the ranks as a regular patrol officer, field training officer, detective, SWAT team member, mental health peace officer, and then ended as a patrol supervisor. However, I found the core issues I had with law enforcement to be systemic and that my thought processes and beliefs better aligned with health care.

Additionally, I during the plethora of interactions I had with nurses throughout my time as an officer I was always left in awe of the communication their teams had, the general level of aptitude, education and intelligence held by everyone, and the overwhelming amount of nurses that were deeply satisfied with their career.

The final straw was one night I was waiting for a DWI blood draw and began chatting up a nurse. I was moaning about how envious I was of her and she looked me dead in the eye and said, "you're only 30, so just go to school and become a nurse. We need male nurses and you would be a great fit. The only thing stopping you is you."

That really resonated with me and I took it as a challenge. The more disillusioned with law enforcement I became the deeper my resolve to become a nurse grew. Then one day, just like when I made my choices to join the Marine Corps and become a police officer, the desire was too overwhelming and I fully committed to becoming a nurse, haven't looked back since, and honestly I haven't been this happy in a long time.

On the application side of things, I figured they wouldn't be sending out emails. That would be too arduous a task during a time where they are already busy. 4-6 weeks sounds like FOREVER at this point. I am contemplating freezing myself like Cartman in South Park while he was waiting for the release of the new gaming console LOL.

I really appreciate this whole thread. I had all of these questions recently and finally a couple of answers! 1 week down 3-5 to go!

I applied for the ADN program. I am a current LVN and missed the LVN - RN bridge deadline. It came up so fast! ? I'm soo nervous about getting accepted. I know I rushed to get a chance to apply. I made a 70% on the TEAS. Did pretty well on Math and Reading. 88 and 89%. English and Science scores... pretty mediocre =/. Applied with B's in A&P I & II. And finished Micro on June 8th with a B. So I hope they count it as completed. Does anyone know what the class schedule will be like? How many days a week? Hours? If I do not get accepted this semester, I will apply again in the Spring for Collin, Brookhaven, and Grayson. I will be a bit more prepared for the next application round. LOL

From my understanding the schedule is 8-4 Monday-Thursday with an open lab Friday to practice. One of those days during the week is also a 12 hour clinical shift.

That being said I am under the impression that also includes some of the gen-ED corequisites classes that 99% of applicants have already completed (Lifespan, Comp 1, Humanities, ect.). So the day might be a few hours shorter if you have those done, but that is pure speculation on my part.

Hey guys, anyone received an acceptance email yet?

Nope. Nobody I know has either. They said the emails will be going out 4-6 weeks after the deadline. So I'm thinking they start going out the week of July 6-10th.
