College of the Canyons Stats

Published

Hello all,

I am applying this summer for Spring 2011 admissions for COC. I know they choose their students based on 2 criteria. i wanted to know for those students who have been accepted, what were your stats. Do you have a prior degree? What was your GPA for your undergrad, and for your pre-reqs? Have you worked in a hospital? Their application has a section where you can mark off if you were a first generation college student, if you had emotional circumstances or economic challenges. How will that affect the applicant?

I know this other question should go under a different topic, but what is their nursing program like? i tried searching the classes for each semester to simulate what their class/clinical schedule would be like but I got confused with the "short term" classes and the different lectures for each class. Could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at COC? where clinicals are practiced? When I was getting my training at COC for CNA we did Henry Mayo hospice.

Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions but i really want to get a picture of the future, lol. I'm getting old and wish to get my new career going. I've got a degree in Biology from MSMC that has really gotten me no where, and since I've always been interested in medicine and have had some experience as a CNA I think nursing is a great choice. I've spoken to my friends who graduated with me but they got their degree in Nursing, and they just love what they do. they have given me real facts on the pros and cons and this seems like the right move. Thank you for your imput. :-)

i floats to nicu when there is needed. i've also worked for nursery for a year before getting into peds and then picu.

you will find that there is a specialty for every nurse. however, my advise for any new grads is to work med-surg first for a year at least.

i love working for picu the most. nicu isn't my calling. i don't like not able to have any communication with the patients. besides, i like the variety of picu patients--head trauma, mva, near-drowning, asthma, seizure, accidental ingestions, etc. nicu has the same certain diagnoses and you will never take care of trauma patients.

i'm going to answer your question below

[color=yellow]could anyone tell me what a typical week is for a nursing student at coc? where clinicals are practiced?

the clinical sites includes valley presbyterian, henry mayo, northridge hospital, simi valley, and glendale memorial.

you will have 2 days of classroom and 2 days of clinical. the clinical is very flexible since they even offer clinical on the weekend!

hope this helps!

aww thank you so much for answering that question for me. It helps a lot... I was really confused looking at the COC schedule. so you don't have lecture and clinicals on the same day right? I was looking at their hospitals and they had kaiser in LA but not sure if its' accurate. Did you get your degree from them? Wait you said clinicals on weekends??? Wooohooo, that's awesome. I have a 3 yr old and I wouldn't even be asking all these questions if she wasn't my priority, but glad to know that there is flexibility. I've got my inlaws 5 min from my home who are willing to look after her, but i dont want to bother them sooo much since they are a little ill (father in law just had a pace maker installed). Since you know a lot about COC's nursing program, did you get your degree from them?

Wait so nursery is an option too? I'm sorry for my ignorance. Ohhhh i used to volunteer at LAC-USC in the nursery and loved it sooo much...if I could get a job there would be even better, although NICU is really something that calls to me as well. I think since I've always loved babies i feel it's perfect for me....thank you again for your post, yuo really made my day

Hi skybmonkey... so you are taking TEAS this coming September 24 at COC? i am also taking the said exam. i have a query regarding the TEAS... Did you pay for the test?

Hi skybmonkey... so you are taking TEAS this coming September 24 at COC? i am also taking the said exam. What preparations did you make?

Kurt,Yes I am taking the test this Friday. I have only been able to use the TEAS study book, and I am focusing a lot on the math b/c that is my weakness. I've read a lot of posts, and a lot of the people who scored well only used the TEAS study guide book b/c they say the test is just like the practice exams in the book. The science part I think I am not too sure on b/c they say the TEAS does not do a good job in covering for that material. The English and reading I reviewed and it's pretty basic stuff. How about yourself? I'm trying not to be nervous so that i don't mess up. I'm going to commute from Palmdale that day so I'll probably be really early at the campus since I don't want to take a chance. We gotta check in by 7:45 so the drive from here to the campus is like 30-40 min without traffic. lol...that means I'll be leaving no later than 6:45.

Ohh and Kurt I didn't pay for the practice test, I am not 100% sure but I think it's just like the practice tests in the book the only difference might be that the practice on line tests are timed. There is another website that has practice problems here is the link http://www.testprepreview.com/teas_practice.htm and county LA also has some practice tests http://dhrdcap.co.la.ca.us/olt/index.cfm?fuseaction=general.selectTestType

From my research the science part has questions relating to

energy, force, rocks, hydrologic cycle, independent and controlled variables, tectonic plates, specific heat, astronomy (centripedal force), kinetic and potential energy, covalent polar and ionic bonds, evaporization, vaporization, condensation.

someone mentioned the mcgraw hill entrance exam does a good job in convering the science part. hope that helps.

also know how to convert F into Celcius, and how to find the 3rd leg of the triangle , how to convert a fraction into a decimal, ratios, mean, median, mode, and the formula of I=prt

i will start my review tomorrow or probably tonight. It seems you are already ready for the test. By the way, my schedule is 1pm. You're earlier than me.

Seriously I don't know, i know people who start studying weeks even months before, and I can honestly say I just started this week. I tried weeks before but I felt like it was repetative and got bored. So we'll see. I had no idea they split the testing, but makes sense b/c i'm sure there are a lot of people who are applying. I know they accept on the basis of lotery and certain criteria, so I'm hoping that scoring decent will get me in. hehehe, I'm on the waitlist for AVC also, but I probably won't get a chance to get in until FAll 2011 or even Spring 2012. AVC requires a 75% passing rate, and COC a 65 or 66 not quite sure, so I have to score at least 75% so that if COC doesn't take me at least I got my spot secured with AVC. Good luck on you testing. :-)

lets hope for the best... and expect for the worst... hehehe let's keep prayin'!!!

Yes you are right. Kurt, I foud a link I had saved that a girl who scored well in the science recommened. It's an online PDF of a book that covers it all. http://www.learnatest.com/lx_images/_ebook_files/1576857052.pdf?q=#search=%34nursing%34

if i can be of help in math, please don't hesitate to ask me... i am willing to help you! im using my yahoo messenger right now!

kurt, thanks for the offer. I'm sorry didn't get a chance to log in. So I can't really say how I did b/c the test itself is not a brainer but yet you can make one tiny mistake and there it goes. I don't know why it takes 24-48hrs to get the results when it's computerized but oh well. Waiting anxiously. :-) good luck
