Kindred Nurses Set to Strike Over Conditions, Not Heebie-Jeebies

  1. 150 Kindred nurses to vote overwhelmingly to affiliate with the California Nurses Association in December 2013.
And they've received some official backup to their concerns since then: This past April, the California Department of Public Health cited the hospital for patient care violations in planning and implementing patient care, staffing plans for nursing, infection control, respiratory care, pharmaceutical services and general safety and maintenance..

The one shift I worked at a Kindred facility via Agency was the worst shift I had as an Agency nurse. Part of it was due to their electronic charting, which I'd never done in any way, and the total lack of orientation to charting electronically.

I hope this strike does some good, although only 1 day probably won't do much.

A one day strike makes a statement to the employer, but does not allow them to bring in scabs. They have to commit to more than one days work for a company to bring them in.

Remember on this Labor Day weekend all the work and sacrifice union members have done in the past. Collective action works in obtaining worthwhile goals. Support our union Brothers and Sisters in their collective actions.
Without Labor, Capital can not be formed. Without capital, capitalism can not exist and we all suffer as a result.

I've worked for Kindred LTC, and I'm not surprised.

Westminster hospital nurses ratify union contract with raises, shift breaks, patient safety training
Feb. 7, 2016... Nurses at the Westminster facility voted for the union in December 2013 but negotiations had dragged on. The nurses staged a one-day strike last September, citing chronically short staffing, inadequate meal and rest breaks, and a high turnover rate, with experienced nurses quitting due to poor working conditions.

Winning this first contract has strengthened our ability to provide the highest quality care,” said Kindred nurse Clarissa “Bing” Cruz, in a statement released by the union. “Our nurses know we can move forward, better equipped to advocate for our patients.”...

... Last month, the parent company agreed to pay $125 million to settle federal charges that it “knowingly caus[ed] skilled nursing facilities to submit false claims to Medicare for rehabilitation therapy services that were not reasonable, necessary and skilled, or that never occurred,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice...

Now they can struggle to enforce the ratios with the advice and protection of their union.

A one day strike. Fire them and replace them. I'd "scab" cover them for a day.
