CNM Programs at Frontier and Stony Brook

Specialties CNM

Hello,

I have an Associate's degree and I will earn my BSN this May. I currently work as an RN on a L+D unit with just 6 months experience. I went into nursing school knowing that I wanted to be in L+D...and I was right!!!:yeah: I absolutely love it. It is such a passion of mine already. One of the midwives that I work with went to Frontier and she said she loved it but it has been too busy lately to sit down with her to ask questions.

I lived in NY until this past June, then moved to PA for my husband to go to pharmacy school. We have a 3yr old son and we hope to be moving back to NY after he graduates in 2013. Therefore, I feel like a distance learning program would be the best option for me.

Does anyone have any experience with these schools that would be willing to give me some helpful information? I called Frontier and they said the clinicals don't start until the 2nd yr, which would be perfect because we would be home in NY when they started if I were to start the program next Fall. Does anyone know how many days per week we would have clinicals in either of the programs? Would I be able to work while in the program?

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! ;)

Question for current students & grads. Has anyone in your cohort completed their clinicals in an out of hospital placement?

Clinicals do not need to be completed in a hospital setting, but must be with a CNM.

Hope this helps.

Thank you it does help! I live in WA where there a few independent CNMs practicing so I will need to start seeking midwives out now.

I'm not sure it you were saying you heard Frontier was cold and impersonal, but if so it couldn't be farther from the truth. Out of all the schools I looked at it is the only one that has history and meaning, especially about its campus. It seems less like an institution as some schools and more some place to be comfortable at.

that was stony brooks experience. however I know two persons who one did well and the other did not. I have heard tho the school has changed for the worst. I hope it is not the case cause I attend to apply.

I don't have any direct experience with Frontier, but I know a bunch of students who are enrolled or have graduated from their program, and alll really enjoyed it. A lot of people have trouble finding local preceptors though, so start looking early!

Eastern Carolina U only accepts applicants from North and South Carolina.

Philadelphia U is all online with 2 on campus visits. They are pretty expensive. For the price you pay for an MS Midwifery, you can pay thousands less and get a DNP from Frontier.

I went to philau several times and they are not the school for me. they are not a school that will encourage those who are inquiring. frontier I liked from the first second I called them. I am waiting to see if I have been excepted to frontier for class 136.

I heard that too that its really just a money milll...more students pouring in with no clinicals sites or jobs. I'm just curious to how Stony Brook and University of Cincinnati do their clinicals and how performance is critiqued?
