CNL program at University of Maryland

Hello,

I am thinking about applying CNL program at University of Maryland for Spring 2010. My concerned is about my GPA which is low (including prereq = 3.3 ) I am wondering is there any chance that I will get in? is anyone that you know that get in with this low gpa?

How many applicant for each semester?

I agree with *ac*. It's really depend. I just want to be in school the lease amount of time. I don't mind the intensity. The CNL also provide the some graduate course which if I want to do the specialty later I don't need to take some of the class. But that's not the main reason. Even though it's pricey but it's not that bad compare to JHU-accelerated BSN.

I am also looking at Hopkins for a second choice, but I agree with you that the tuition is REALLY expensive. UMB is definitely my first choice.

I also looked at Georgetown's second degree Accelerated BSN. It seems pretty comparable to Hopkins, but I have not really crunched the numbers yet to figure out the difference in tuition.

I recently learned that CNL students are eligible to apply for the MS/MPH dual degree option at UMB. Has anyone ever heard any feedback about this option? Any thoughts on the quality of the MPH program at UMB? I was a little surprised to see that it's not included in the US News & World Report public health graduate school rankings (though I also know that these rankings should be taken with a grain of salt). Any thoughts on the value of completing an MPH immediately after the CNL or would it make more sense to get some work experience upon graduation from nursing school before pursuing the MPH? Is the MPH at UMB a solid program or should the MPH be done somewhere with more name-recognition, such as Hopkins? What are the employment prospects for a new grad RN with an MPH?

I appreciate any tips, suggestions, or insight!

I was enrolled at Stevenson U. for the 2nd degree BSN option, but decided to back out and apply to UM for CNL 2010 spring semester. I have a spot in HCC's accelerated program for May 2010 as my back up, but I really hope to go to UM. The wait until Oct. is going to kill me! I want to eventually go on to a NP program or CRNA, so I decided it was worth the money to go straight to a masters and then do the post-masters. I have a BS from UMCP (dietetics), so I'm a little bit partial to UM :D Hopefully it helps me!? I have 3 kids in elementary school, but I have a supportive family. I've got the determination, so I'm confident I can do it! My undergrad gpa from UM was 3.3 but I have a 4.0 in the CNL prerequisites. Does anyone know how they look at that? I hate having to wait!!

JennyA= we are in the similar situation. I hope I can help you. I need to wait and see, too, if I get in. One of my friend she have 3.1 GPA(non healthcare field UG) and 4.00 prereq she got for Spring 2007. But it couple years ago!

If we meant to be in UMB we will get in, won't we? :) Let's get busy helping the kids going back to school, won't be long you will hear back from them.

Hi JennyA and Blondell---another mom here who's hoping that all of the back-to-school stuff can distract me while I wait to hear about my CNL application. Where would you two be commuting from? If I get in, I'll be making the commute from Bethesda. Did a dry run earlier this week and was really pleasantly surprised by what an easy drive it was. Granted, it was not during rush hour which is probably a very different beast! Looking forward to keeping in touch as we eagerly await an admission decision.

I am getting ready to turn in my application and I also applied to GTown. Although its expensive, there is an option for a work scholarship with the Washington Hospital Center so that's what I am going for. I am moving back to MD in a week (from NYC) so I am going to sign up for an info session in the fall hopefully.

Jenny A, - you said you were already accepted into HCC for May?? That early? I know its supposed to be a good program but still an ASN correct? I plan to go on to advance practice so I dont think thats an option for me.

I live in Columbia/Clarksville area, so I am a little bit closer than you are. It isn't a bad commute because traffic is typically going the other way (south), but once you get in to the city you have to plan for morning congestion. My husband works at NIH in Bethesda and we both grew up in Silver Spring, so I know exactly where you'll be coming from. I applied a while ago, and when I first applied it was for the BSN program. I had them switch it to CNL. I think when I first applied, I specified I wanted the Shady Grove campus, but I'm not sure why I did that! I guess I should check with them to see? Baltimore would be more convenient.

Hi Again JennyA---alas, CNL is only offered at Baltimore campus. I would be a very happy camper if it were offered at Shady Grove. They said that there is no chance of that in the forseeable future.

Yes, still ASN. I can't say I was officially "accepted" yet because the applications haven't come out yet, but they have rolling admissions and if you have a certain number of points (they assign points based on gpa, prevous bachelors) and you pass their entrance test (I passed yesterday), then you are guaranteed a seat. I want to go into advanced practice too, so if that is my only option I will be upset since it will mean a much longer road. UM has the RN to MS, and then post-masters, but that would take a LOT longer and I don't know that I could handle all of that schooling while working as a nurse!
