To get to the specialties forum, you need to hit the specialty button at the top and click "nursing specialties". Here's the link to the LTC one: https://allnurses.com/forums/f22/

Anyway, back to your problem... was she busy with other important tasks? Or did she outright not feel like doing it? If she didnt feel like it, I'd report her to management and let the DON handle her.

the immediate answer is you need to have someone else do it or do it yourself. don't let the patient suffer for someone else's poor work ethic. then, as a don, i would expect you to document the situation carefully so that i could go to the cna and get a convincing explanation or proceed with corrective action. there is nothing more frustrating to a director than having a gut feeling that someone isn't doing their job and not being able to get anybody to document what they know.

Did the CNA explain why they did not want to get the patient up, I work in a hospital and sometimes I do not feed patients if they look as if the might aspirate but I do inform the RN that the patient is lethargic and I do not feel comfortable feeding said patient.

If the CNA has a valid reason then assess the patient. If, on the other hand, they are just being stubborn or insubordinate, tell them and counsel them right there. If you wait to tell the DNS, it'll have less impact. Why do you all say 'tell the DON'. Y'all are licensed nurses and if someone isn't doing what they are supposed to do, y'all need to step up and do something immediately.

:yeahthat:My carers know exactly where the line is and don't cross it more than once!If this is an unusual thing for your CNA to do question why? don't just assume they are being awkward.

hi, i would certainly investigate if she had a valid reason we would go from there.. if not it would be a verbal/written warning...i try to handle situations myself prior to running to the don...
