CNA Lecture Online?

Published

I will be taking the CNA course in the Spring, consisting of Lecture, Lab, and Clinical. The classroom lecture is once a week for 2:50min. I also have the option of taking it online which I would greatly prefer. Do you think I would miss out on anything if I took lecture online? Thanks.

You may miss out on practical skills, which is part of the certification exam, but I am not sure. I firmly believe that entry level positions such as CNA and LPN should have at least portions of the class where you come for a lab to practice some of the manovers, because safety is extremely important. It seems that everyone is offering on line courses. Not a bad thing; but see if you can come for the skills, at least.

I would not go the online route just because you need to have the labs and clinicals to make sure you know your on the right track. Maybe the program your talking about is not a certified class? Some states don't demand that you become certified to work in that position, just have a certain amount of hours...you will have to check with your state.

My CNA class was a 4 week program that was 126 hrs.

The first week we consumed our book literally...so fast paced.

the second/third week was 2 days lecture and 3 days skills when the LPNs were off campus doing their clinicals.

The 4th week we went to LTC to do our week of clinicals

and then we schedule our skills test and written test.

Hope this gives you an ideal but know that every state is different.

I dont know, if you have never been a CNA before its kind of hard to do it from online. I would take the class because you dont want to miss anything important.

Let me clarify, I would only be taking "lecture" online, not lab and clinical.

There are skills in Lecture?

No, but there are skills in clinical. In my class, it was both, a lecture and skill teaching combined. Things that you may need practice. That was many years ago, but I can't see the reason for a major change in teaching a CNA course. For the certification exam, there is a skills portion where they may ask you to perform 5 out of at least 30+ skills and then a written exam. You must pass both to receive the certification. Most times, you have to be able to visualize and perform the skills a few times beforehand to get the basic picture.

How are they offering the lab skills? Are they telling you to come in once or twice a week for the skills portion of the class?

The class is at the community college and fully accredited. Course length is 16 weeks, Lecture is once a week for 2:50 min either on campus or online, Clinical is once a week for 8 hours at a LTC facility, and lab is once a week for 2:50 min on campus.

That sounds doable to me. If you do think that you need to actually hear the lecturer speak, maybe you can go sit in on that particular lecture. As long as you get to practice the skills, that is really, really important. Good luck to you!
