CNA Commandments

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Okay so for anyone who hasn't noticed, I'm big on the for fun threads.

Today a co worker and myself were talking to some new hires and starting cracking up at our own "commandments". Of course the new hires thought we were crazy, but hey they'll see when they work the floor for awhile.

1-Thou shall not try to hide that pee ring on the sheet with a dry chuck to keep from stripping a bed.

2-Thou shall not then try to lie about said pee ring, when I find it.

3-Thou shall not keep a notebook of what the other CNA's are doing that bugs you...on you're 2nd day on the hall.

4-Thou shall not be a know-it-all.

5-Thou shall not leave Mrs. Smith on the toilet, forget about her, and then Lie and say she must have gone into the bathroom by herself. She has 1 leg. I doubt she walked in by herself.

6-Thou will NEVER eat food off a residents plate...especially a puree plate. EWWWWW!

7-Thou shall never gossip.

8-Thou shall always wash hands, lest ye want to give half the hall skin mites.

FuzzyWuzzy- I expect you to add something hilarious like you always do!

PS- Yes I've have encountered all of these things.

What I tried to tell him was, "Tuck it in further. He's going to BM himself if not." It was a long drawn out argument...or him saying I was rude. :( Which led to him saying the b word in front of a resident and might have gotten him fired. All I know is that if it was my grandpa, I'd be irate to find a CNA did that.

Thou shalt not skip resident showers when you are short on time and then chart them as "completed."

Now I know why certain rooms have been smelling... ...funky.

Specializes in none as of yet.

Thou shalt not leave the facility while still clocked in (stealing company time) to go get lunch and clock out when you come back with said lunch. This means that you are taking a very long lunch break and delaying my own when I already take a late lunch.....

If anyone did this at any other job, they would be soooo fired...

Specializes in geriatrics, dementia, ortho.

Thou Shalt Not EVER call in to work right before thy shift is about to start, say "I'm at the mechanic with my car, not sure if I can make it or not", promise to call and let thine manager (and BRAND NEW coworkers who are counting on your ass) know and then just not call and not show up.

Ugh! How unprofessional and inconsiderate can you be?

Specializes in none as of yet.

Thou shalt never underestimate inconsiderate or unprofessional CNAs. Just like the residents, they will always surprise you...

Thou shalt not "call in sick" on labor day weekend, when there is a totally green CNA who ends up having to cover the whole floor. (green CNA was me, my 5th day on the job, with a nurse who didn't know how to say "no you can't call in", or get anyone to cover, apparently. Fortunately, my facility now has CNAs as staffing coordinators so they can cover if there's no other option. Works SO much better, and those gals are tough on slackers, knowing that they might have to fill in.)

Thou shalt not put a resident's knee brace on BACKWARDS! I have found this several times on a certain resident, and let me tell you: A knee brace, like a knee, only bends one way.

Thou shalt not cake skin cream on like it's whipped icing.

THOU SHALT NOT LEAVE DIRTY LINENS IN THE HOPPER! There were BM-soaked sheets sitting there for 2 days because everyone said "It wasn't me, so I'm not cleaning it up", and housekeeping ignored it. Finally I did it so I could actually use the hopper to clean out my resident's clothes that were covered in vomit. I admit I've left stuff there to soak when extremely rushed, but always go back ASAP to clean up.

I am a recent CNA grads , live in NY , i got my license a month ago . I can't seem to find any jobs , i applied everywhere . does anyone know where they might be hiring ?

Thou shalt not say "DAMN IT, roll over here" to an 11 year old boy with severe brain damage after having trouble rolling him (who is not able to roll over), meanwhile yanking his tiny body over so hard his head almost hits the bedside table. When I report you for doing so, you shall not act surprised and threaten to "kick my @$$" in the parking lot. This is not middle school.

Thou shalt not leave the mentally handicapped 4 year old sitting in a brief full of bm until 8 p.m., after being told by the nurse at 3:00 that he needed changed. When I happen to go by the room and see that he's still dirty and proceed to change him myself, do not look at me and say "I was about to change him..."

Thou shalt not leave stacks of socks and tshirts within reach of a mentally handicapped resident with pica. When I go in and have to pull a sock out of her throat and pick up several other chewed, soaked socks, do not scold her. You should have known better. You've worked there for five years.

From when I worked geriatrics:

Thou shalt not tie your pleasantly confused resident down to the bed with a sheet, simply because she kept removing her gown and you didn't want to deal with it. She was in a private room for a reason.

Thou shalt not tell a combative resident "You need a good @$$ beating, is what you need."

UGH.

Not a CNA but witnessed this when my grandmother was in a nursing home.

Thou shall clean up all urine dribbles on the floor with the proper cleaning solutions and not just soak it up with a paper towel.

My grandmother was incontinent and one time she had an accident on the floor. I alerted her CNA and the woman came in grabbed a paper towel and just sopped it up and left. THERE'S STILL URINE RESIDUE ON THE FLOOR!!!

ICK!!!!

Please tell me said CNA was dismissed! So very very sad. thank God you were there!

Specializes in LTC.

Thou shalt not whine about how bored you are. If you're bored, I can think of about 75 things you can do to pass the time... like, say, toilet someone, walk someone, do nails, push fluids, pass out water pitchers, help out your fellow CNAs, clean out bedside drawers, pass the snacks, do ROM, track down those missing knee braces.... oh look 10 things right off the bat that I've NEVER seen you do unless forced.

The first one was, yes. She was horrible. Constantly using profanity around the residents, she never washed them, never wiped them when changing them, never brushed their teeth. I'm not one to report people for things, but that was abuse, plain and simple, and that little boy has it hard enough as it is. (He's in there because he drowned a couple of years ago :( )
