Clueless in BC

Published

Hi

I am 28yrs old and have decided that i WOULD LIKE to pursue a career in nursing.I would ideally like to read for a degree in nursing a university here in BC Canada but they requirements are bio math and chem which i don't mind writing over as i wrote exams way back in '98 but only did agricultural science and geography as science subjects.thing is it is required to have at least 30hrs volunteer work TO BE ACCEPTED INTO THE UNI. I have never done anything, and on a search for health care places here, they want volunteers with some qualifications. Where do i start?

I am thinking also about doing the pracital nursing and then try to get into university for the degree program,or midwifery school.

Anyone one with any ideas of how things are done here in Abbotsford BC?

Looking at UFV Would like BCIT :yeah:too

No way, you have to basically apply like a job for this type of volunteering.

Anytype of volunteering you will be do pretty much the same process.

Happy Volunteering!

BTW which school are you looking at?

Uni. Fraser Valley? Or Trinity Western?

BCIT is a tough program, very intense!

I know some people who are 3rd year UFV and they have good things to say about the school.

Really!?!

I am in Abbotsford and they hold all the classes in Chilliwack which is kind of far from me,Do you know anyone in Abbotsford? How do they get to school on time?lol

Hi,

I was wondering how it came along. Were you able to make it into a nursing school?

I highly doubt that things will be easier in Ontario. They're having the same issues as the rest of the country and although they have proportionally just as many nursing seats as other provinces they also have proportionally as many people wanting those seats. There are other threads here describing the difficulties people have been having with getting into nursing schools there too. And Ontario led the charge with vacancy management in hospitals and other facilities by not filling vacancies, so the new crop of nurses haven't gotten jobs. So the pain is pretty well spread out across the country.

I am 100% in agreement with janfrn. It is not easier in Ontario at all. Many new RN grads are having a very tough time finding work right now as our hospitals are no longer allowed to run deficits. Previously those deficits were dealt with by handing out more money. This is no longer an option because of the recession and our lovely politicians wasting tax dollars year after year, which has left Ontario broke.

I was admitted into the RN program however I am holding back because I am really concerned about racking tons of debt at this point in my life. JMO.

That sounds like a wise decision right now linzz. As hard as it was to get into school and as much as you want to become an RN, now isn't the best time to be spending all that cash on something that may not work out in the short term. If they accepted you once, they'll accept you again when things open up a bit. I strongly recommend patience to everyone while the world recovers.

I absolutely understand the wanting to go in, but the the cost issues. I am hoping to get in for Fall 2010 at UFV. I am currently getting my volunteer experience which will be done by the end of December. I am fairly confident I will get in, with really high hopes of course. I am currently a third year biology major with a concentration in Genetics and Microbiology. Here is hoping. However to afford to go to school, I have a co-op job in January that I am starting, and one in the summer as well. If I can ring it, I can probably save enough for the following year. I have no idea how I am going to pay for the next year though haha.

I will find a way, not it is just to get in lol.

I wish you luck in your endeavors, and I hope everything works out for the best.

You could visit the Vancouver School Board website for continuing education, and see which community colleges offer equivalents for Bio 11, Chem 11 etc etc: Choose Your Session

I didn't take Chem 11 in high school. I now have to make sure I get that done, because it is a prereq for the Human Anatomy & Physiology course at college/university.

Wow... I have so much work to do.... I've spent the last 5 yrs to attain my BComm, and now I'm thinking of trying to get a BSN...... crazy? I think so!

=X

''To join our team you will have: *Graduated from an approved School of Nursing''

I JUST FOUND THIS IN A JOB POST,How do i know the school i am choosing is approved by the hospitals etc in BC? What if i choose a school and later find no one accepts students form there?

Where did you volunteer? I am meeting with CARE and they will help me with the volunteering.
