I was at my local dog park. Suddenly I heard a woman screaming, it was coming from the parking strip next to the busy road. Several, many, loud piercing screams!
My first thought, instinct, was FLIGHT...I was walking away as the screams started and kept walking....I did not want to be the first to see....???....some person or dog hit by a car was all I could think of!
I hoped others would respond first and I could show up later! I was not afraid of liability, lawyers, being sued, I just did not want to see some bloody mess! YUCK!
It seemed like a long time but I know was only a few seconds, others responded and it quickly became apparent there was no medical emergency. I did finally head over to the scene. But boy was, am, I disgusted with myself!
(She had lost her balance, fell to her knees, and her dogs ran off, but no one, or dog, was hurt).

Flight is a natural human reaction designed to protect you from danger.
Sometimes it is the correct reaction in some situations.
Intervening in an emergency is a choice that needs to be thought out first; you don't want to run carelessly into a potentially dangerous situation.
My husband describes some industrial safety situations where there are often 2 bodies recovered: the first person who was in danger and the second person killed trying to rescue the first.
All dogs came back safely.
I guess maybe I was instinctively thinking....get away from danger....that makes me feel a little better! I hope, think, less time went by, by the time I swallowed my fear and went to assess the situation, than I thought. I know how time slows down in an emergency.
