Class Schedule Dilemma

Published

Okay, so this summer I'm taking Elementary Statistics, Psychology, and Sociology.

The classes I have remaining are: World Lit, Public Speaking, A&P I and II, Introduction to Human Development, US History, Microbiology, and Perspectives on The Human Mind.

My current thinking is to split the classes up like this:

Fall 2014

World Lit

Public Speaking

A&P I

Introduction to Human Development

Spring 2015 (apply to nursing program during this semester)

A&P II

US History

Perspectives on The Human Mind

Summer 2015

Microbiology

My goal is to only take one science class at a time and to reserve A&P for full semesters instead of summers, and to balance out those harder classes with easier ones. What do you guys think of this schedule? Any suggestions for class flipping would be awesome.

I think you've done a good job at spacing out your classes. Only you know what you can handle and it's good that you're thinking ahead. Most people just dive right in before giving their schedule a second though.

The only thing that I, personally (not necessarily you!) might change would be Micro. I know you wouldn't want two science classes in one semester...but what if they were your only two classes that semester? That would be totally do-able. Then you could take some of your lesser credit hour classes for the summer to breeze through.

Just a suggestion. Anyway, I think you'll do great. Like I said, anyone willing to put time and thought into their schedule will certainly be smart enough to do well in school :D Try hard, do your best and I'm sure you'll do great!

How are you with science? If you are good, as in best subject good, I think you will be okay. It also depends on your school. Micro at my school was a BEAST! My professor really cared and was awesome in lab. However, for lecture, he just stood in the corner and read the powerpoint that came with the book, maybe give an example of it. We also had about 6 hours of online HW per week, on top of studying and lab. For our unknown (if you do not know, most micro classes give you an unknown bacteria and you have to figure out what it is), he gave us two bacteria and we had to isolate them and figure out what both were. This was actually really fun and I loved lab. However, before we started that, we had a TON of material in lab. In the summer classes, they had 4 weeks to do ALL of that. It took me two weeks to get my unknown, but there were a lot of students who barely got it in the 7 weeks he gave us.

I would check out what the class is like at your school. I would rather take A&P over the summer than micro. All the classes for your fall semester are easy, in my opinion. Your spring semester should be okay. The history class is super easy - at my school - and I am not sure about the human mind class. It could be fairly easy, depending on the professor.

Good luck!! If you buckle down and study hard, you should be okay. Just micro in the summer may be super stressful.

Does your school not have advisors? At my school all freshmen are required to see their advisor & get help planning their schedules prior to registration. Even though it was required, I still would have done it because it helped so much! My advisor works solely for the College of Nursing so she knows which classes are "easy" or "hard". Look into it because it really does help. Also check out http://www.ratemyprofessor.com when choosing classes based on who is teaching. That site has helped me more than a few times now.

Micro was my FAVORITE class. Loved it. Solidified my passion for this profession. Really pay attention and get very familiar with this class. I lucked out. My professor has been a PA for 30 years and was able to apply his knowledge to our learning. Good luck!

Oh gosh....posted my last comment on the wrong forum! Stupid phone app! Hahaha. Disregard.

Yes, we do have advisors. I've met with mine a lot (probably a lot more than most people do, haha). I had originally thought about not taking any classes this summer, but I talked to her about it and she said I'd be behind if I did that. She told me I was doing great and encouraged me to keep my GPA the way it is now.

I use ratemyprofessor religiously and I've looked up every professor I plan on taking.

RMP especially helped me last semester. I got a great math professor who I took for Math Modeling (I struggle with math a little bit, but I got an A. I'm also taking her for my stats class this summer) and a fabulous government professor. A lot of people dislike my govt prof because he's hard, but I got an A in the class. A lot of bad reviews about him came from people who just didn't like the class/didn't like him/wanted their grade handed to them. I loved him though.

I've thought about that as well. I thought about doing A&P II and Micro during the spring and the Human Mind and US History during the summer. The pre and co-reqs have had a lot to do with how I've had to space them out. For example, at our school, you can't take Intro to Human Development until you've taken Psychology, can't take Micro until you've taken A&P, etc. We also have a rule where both English Composition classes and a math elective must be completed within the first 30 credit hours.

I'm going to try to find a great professor. The longest summer semester we have is 8 weeks. Idk, I might tinker with it a little bit more.
