circs

Anyone here still do circs without some kind of anesthetic? (block or EMLA?)

Anyone have any policy/position statements bookmarked? I know this is a heated issue for some especially those of us that are parents to boys. I do not want to get into a discussion about whether or not circs are needed/desireable. Although that is how this question entered my mind in the first place. I find it hard to believe that this still goes on in hospitals with all the emphasis on pain control.

When I was going through nursing school in the early 90's it was still being debated, but have never seen it or heard of it since I started working with infants 6 1/2 yrs ago. I mean I've heard rumors of it on the huge long circumcision discussion that is on this site but never anywhere I worked.

Oh my word.

I just visited said circ thread...it has been going on since 2003!

I am amazed.

Ok well let me change my initial q.

As a nurse if some doc in your unit were to attempt a circ without some type of anesthesia, what would you do?

I know this is kind of a "meh" issue to some of us but if you have time. I would like to know what your response would be.:D

We use lidocaine. If I saw a doc getting ready to circ without administering it, I would stop them.

When premedicate with Tylenol (PO) and LMX-4 (topically) prior to all circs.
