Cincinnati Mount St. Joseph MAGELIN

Published

Hi!

I am starting the MAGELIN accelerated MSN program at Mount St. Joseph in May. I am so excited but very nervous!! Has anyone been through this program and is there any advice that you have? Is there anything you wish you would've done/knew before starting class? I am trying to go in as prepared as I can.

Thank you!!

Not a problem. I think they are. The first semester is a struggle, but it's doable. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Thank you, PinkyT3.

PinkyT3, How do you study and practice for skills? How often do you go into lab to practice? Do you find yourself going into lab on the weekends to practice your skills? Thank you.

The skills are taught during scheduled lab/class time and we get a lot of class time to practice. I would say we were in the lab maybe 1-2 times per week (give or take) on our own. We spent more time practicing in lab the closer we got to testing for the skill. I did practice on weekends, but only because it was easier and more convenient schedule wise.

Hi PinkyT3, As far as reading is concerned, is more emphasis put on reading the text, reading the PowerPoints associated with each lecture, or a combination of the two in your program at The Mount? Really wish I could email you, but I don't have enough posts.

Every professor/class is different. The professors are pretty clear in what they want us to focus on. They don't really try and trick you.

I am strongly considering this program. I have started the application process and I am finishing up the pre-reqs (so far all 4.0 GPA), I have my financial aid lined up. I'd like to start in May 2020. My last 2 courses are Chemistry (will finish May 9th)and Nutrition (will finish in March). I intend to CLEP Lifespan in the next few weeks and take Patho self paced, independent study online. Any tips, suggestions or experiences you'd offer? I am also going to be looking for any suggestions for a reasonable place to stay during my time down there.

I took the NLN nutrition test that MSJ offers and tested out of it. I costs like $50-$60 maybe? I would definitely recommend looking into it if you’re able to - it saves time and money!

I started May 2019 and it was intense because the semester is shortened and has 3 labs. The second semester is less stressful.

I recall hearing about that. While it would be really nice to have the summer off, I am really anxious to get started. Where/how did you take Patho? Also, have most of the people who started in your cohort, hung in the program or have many washed out (that sounds harsh, but it is something that I have found is a good indicator to see the program's focus) some focus on a process of elimination to keep their NCLEX pass rates close to 100%, others have a nice blend of student retention and high pass rates... any other information you have to offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!!!

Are you a local resident or did you move there to attend the program? I live about 3 hours away, and will need to find an apartment I think. I don't think could handle dorm life (I live with a 17 & 19 year old right now ack! lol) Not sure how easy it will be to find a place.

I took patho at Cincinnati State.

I’m glad I started in May. It was hectic but complete doable.

We started with 11 in our cohort. One person didn’t continue after orientation, another dropped out after maybe two weeks, another towards the end of the semester, and another didn’t continue to the second semester for medical reasons. I believe we have the smallest cohort ??

It may seem overwhelming at times but you just need to prioritize tasks and definitely do not procrastinate. Take things week by week.

I am from Cincinnati. I live about a 35 minutes away from campus. I’m not toooo familiar with that area as far as the best places to live.

During the first semester we could sign up for mentors that are in the cohorts before us. That’s helped a lot! They can give tips and whatnot. My mentee this semester has not contacted me at all or responded when I reached out. Which is a shame because it could help.

Hope you don't mind I sent you a FB friend request. Would love to stay in touch. You are a wealth of information.
