Hi!

I am starting the MAGELIN accelerated MSN program at Mount St. Joseph in May. I am so excited but very nervous!! Has anyone been through this program and is there any advice that you have? Is there anything you wish you would've done/knew before starting class? I am trying to go in as prepared as I can.

Thank you!!

Hi! I am in my first semester in the program. I am enjoying the program so far. It's definitely a lot of work, but we are all surviving. The instructors are pretty good. They definitely want us to succeed.

My advice would be to get a lot of rest before you start and to get as many of your ducks in a row before you start (ex. healthcare, daycare for your kids if you have any, financial aid, employment, etc.). A lot of us were still figuring out most of that stuff a week or 2 in and definitely stressing about it. The first semester doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room for life events/emergencies to happen. It alleviates a lot of stress to walk in on day 1 with all of that off of your list of worries.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

Thank you so much! I am very nervous/excited to get started. Do you remember when you received info about the orientation? I know it is still like 3 months away but I am a planner haha. I emailed the program director 2 weeks ago and I haven't received a response. I currently have a full time job and work a PRN as a PCA at a local hospital trying to save lots of money so I'm more financially stable when I quit my fulltime job. Do you think it is realistic to work during this program? I'm starting in May and it is the supposed to be a more compact semester since it is shorter. I hope to go part time PCA and I have to commit to work 16 hours in order to get healthcare, which isn't difficult with 12 hour shifts.

I think we heard about the date of the orientation about a month before school started. Most of my classmates in my cohort are PCAs and they went down to PRN. They seem fine with managing PRN and the course load. I did hear that starting in May is slightly more stressful than starting in Spring or Fall, so I would take that into consideration. Just make sure to stay organized.

Hi everyone! I am super excited that I found this forum. I just got accepted to the program. I’m moving from CA so I wanted to learn about the area. If anyone has more information in regards to financial aid?

Hi! I am currently in the program. Have you visited the campus yet? If possible, I would suggest visiting the campus and requesting a meeting with financial aid. I moved from out of state as well and they were able to give me a semester by semester breakdown of the cost and loan options. If you can't visit, give the financial aid office a call. They are realllllyyyyy helpful.

@PinkyT3 thank you so much for the info! Are you living on campus or off of campus? I’m not sure what area would be convenient for me to stay.

I live off campus. They do have a portion of their dorms set aside for grad students, but that wasn't for me. There are a couple of apartments right around the corner from the school.

PinkyT3, how much study time did you have to allocate to your classes during your first semester every week? What was your study schedule like, if I may ask? Thank you.

@DCubed

My study schedule depends on my class schedule (for that day) and the workload for the week. On lighter weeks, I find myself spending 4-6 hours doing work of some kind outside of class. This can be actual studying, writing papers, or doing actual assignments. During crazy hectic weeks, I put in A LOT more time.

I organize my time week by week. On Sunday, I make a list of everything that is due for the week and assign each thing to certain days. I try to stay to that schedule as to not overwhelm myself too much on certain days, but sometimes it’s unavoidable.

I try to give myself Friday evening and Saturday off to maintain my sanity.

That's really very helpful, PinkyT3. Thanks so much. Are your other cohort classmates managing okay, as well?
