Cincinnati Hospitals

Published

I am considering a move to Cincinnati after I get my RN next May (07). What hospitals have a good working environment (decent ratios, pay, atmosphere, educational opportunities). I am interested in going into critical care and would love to start as a new grad, so one with a new grad program would be great.

What is Cincy like to live in? I am concerned about it being too conservative -- my political views lean to the left. Would I be a fish out of water there or are there enough civil disobedients around that I could find a community? My preference would be to live in the city, but my husband would want a nice cushy suburb. What are some of the more interesting 'burbs and what are houses priced at these days?

Thanks for any info you can add.

Specializes in lots of specialties.

I think you would be fine I too graduate next May with my RN.There are tons of beautiful "cushy" neighborhoods that your hubby would happy with that are not in the core of cincinnati but surround it and are close to nice hospitals

Check out Mercy Hospital & Jewish(they have several hospitals).Bethesda can be good also .You have so many choices.Alot of hospitals are willing to help you relocate if you are hired

cincinnati is somewhat conservative. we have some excellent hospitals. cincinnati children's is one of the nation's best. here are some links to other area hospitals. if you are looking for a home, check out the east side, hyde park/ oakley area, nice and friendly and not all rebuplican. are you lebanese? my boyfriend is 1/2 lebanese, his dad is from beirut. feel free to ask more about cincinnati, i am born and raised here.

Thanks for the info. Husband is Lebanese from Tripoli (north on the Mediterranean).

I have lived in cincinnati my entire life and have worked in every hospital in the tristate, viturally. Cincinnati is super conservative, but we deal. It is a very catholic city, especially on the west side. The west side consists of a smaller, tighter community and the east side is a little less conservative, IMHO.

As for hospitals: Stay far far away from any of the Mercy Hospitals, especially if you want critical care. My mom worked for Mercy for 20 years and I have done clinicals at a different Mercy in the ICU and its not good. I also worked there for 4 years before nursing school. Mercy doesnt treat their employees well, I have personally seen several dangerous nursing mistakes (first hand) and they are peripheral hospitals so if you want ICU they are not the place to go. I haven't ever heard anything good about any of the Mercy Hospitals, in fact I know they just came under new management so beware.

University is ok. I wouldnt reccommend it, it gets a tad bit crazy. Good Sam is a great hospital and TriHealth is great. I'd reccomend checking out their ICU, they have some of the best resources in the nation. Ive had 3 semesters of clinicals there, including one in ICU, great hospital.

Cincinnati Childrens is awesome. Im precepting there and its great. If you want peds you are at the #8 top childrens hospital in the nation. The nurses there love the hospital and its a great environment to work in.

I havent worked at the Vets hospital but I hear good things about it as well.

I hear good things about St. Elizabeths and I did one semester of clinicals there. The nurses there love it and they have a great retention rate, but again, like Mercy its a peripheral hospital so you arent going to get the acuity for ICU that I would want.

I would suggest living in Hyde Park area, its fun and near the highway. Good Luck:)

Good Samaritan Hospital (Dixmyth Avenue) and Bethesda North Hospital (Montgomery Road) are both part of Tri Health, btw.

I'd really like to work at Good Samaritan Hospital someday...:w00t:

I've only been a "professional" patient there, but I had excellent care...

Specializes in Peds.

I just graduated and am not working yet so I can't really give you any lowdown on the hospitals from an employee's point of view except I have friends that work at Good Sam, Children's and Jewish and they're all happy with their jobs.

Are you moving here because of your husband's job? There are some really nice towns north or Cincinnati such as West Chester, Mason and Lebanon. If you have children, those areas have good schools and they're much lower crime than downtown Cinci. There are 'burbs' of Cinci that are nice such as Indian Hill (if one can afford it). I'm not really attuned to the nicer suburban areas as I tend to avoid big cities where possible.

If you lived in one of those areas (except IH) you could also work at a Dayton hospital. There are some nice ones up there as well.

I agree about the Mercy hospitals. Stay away from them if you can. The most mistakes I have ever seen made in my entire career was at Mercy. They have a heck of a legal team to get them out of massive legal suits. They are horrible and expect too much from their employees.

St. E's is ok...older nurses are welcomed there. But extremely political there. You must know the right people in the right spots to progress along Its unfortunate its that way, but its the truth. they have come up in the world. They pay big money to JD Power and Associates and Solucient's marketing teams to use their copyrighted phrases "the best in the tristate" etc...btw, that is what powers and solucient are; marketing companies...the company pays money for them to copyright the phrase they want and then they advertise the phrase and give them some goofy award. check out their sites and you will see what i mean.

trihealth (good sam) has excellent rep. they have their own school of nursing...huge facility and they are adding on yet again....huge...good neuroscience there....very, very catholic and they attract the west side catholic population. but trihealth's salaries are not as high as the health alliance....they are on the low side.

the health alliance has several hospitals and they pay the best (unless you work at their facilities in northern kentucky where salaries are a bit lower) bennies are good...they have several types of schools and trainings affliated with them...christ is large, has their own school of nursing, and is know as the heart hospital...jewish is becoming known as a leader in orthopedics pay is better there...university is well, university....trauma one there...the st. luke's are the ones in no. ky...just typical hospitals..the only ones in the health alliance that did not 'outlaw' smoking in and around its facility...why? its kentucky...home of the tobacco plant....

cincinnati is a good city...i am moving back from florida...florida medicine is terrible here and is the reason i am moving back..sick husband....i believe that cincy is very aggressive with medicine and treatments and has alot to offer....

now if you are moving from a non snow state, get ready...cincy is full of rolling hills and there are 7 large hills or mini mountains that surround the city, and they can be difficult to navigate...but in all, it is a good place to live and raise kids...obtain education...

for those buffs out there...can you name the 7 hills of cincy?:specs:

Thanks for the heads up! Good info. for those contemplating working at Cincy hospitals...

I noticed that Good Sam doesn't pay that well as far as other departments are concerned (i.e. Reigistrar and some others), BUT, I don't know what the nurses get...

the nurses generally get 4-5.00/less an hr than alliance hospitals.
