Christmas Gift for your unit from docs

Nurses General Nursing

Ok, what is the most silly Christmas gift a doctor has gotten your unit? I remember back in the 80's there were always lots of food gifts. We'd be stuffed with candy, popcorn, cookies... heck we even had a doc bring in Olive Garden salads for everyone. Times have really changed. Today was the kicker. One of our top docs had a huge shopping bag and was giving out boxes of truffles to people like the charge nurses, PT and the unit pharmacists. Then he hands me a box and a card addressed to all unit nursing staff and asks me to be in charge of it. When he left, I opened the box and there were 4 large truffles in it........ we have at least 50 staff that work all three shifts. How in the heck am I supposed to divide that out? With a razor blade? :lol2:

LOL. That is too funny.

Started out as an office nurse: got Christmas bonus(usually about $500.00)

nice dinner at a restaurant for staff/family.

Then went to hospital nursing (3rd shift) We see the empty tins of popcorn/cookies, the leftover Olive Garden lunches from the docs, the crumbs from the sales reps...

From the department director it's usually a tree ornament (looks like about a dollar was spent) and a dinner that was ordered at 5 pm for the 11 pm shift, and heaven forbid someone thing about putting it in the fridge!

My first year in recovery, I took six months off to get sober and went back to work in October. My return and the conditions under which I would be working because of Diversion was very public (thanks to my then boss and against my wishes). The ER docs gave each nurse a huge bottle of wine. I just stood there holding mine and staring at it, thinking "Is this a silent message? Are they trying to tell me something?"

Sounds like they had their heads up their butts:trout: :trout:

Congrats on being sober BTW!

I did work in a smallish rural hosp. The doc's foot the bill for a really nice party at a really nice hotel which included dinner and drinks. After 2 drinks you pay your own tab. Also we got lots of homemade goodies at work.

At HH office this year I got $100 bonus, we got nice small gifts from the office, tons of stuff from pt's, business', etc...

The little angel sits on my one shoulder whispering: "At least he thought of the nurses" while the little devil  sits on my other shoulder shouting: "Grab the razor blade!" Save the box until the doc is back on the unit. Cut the four into fifty pieces, and spread over a nice big tray. Then leave a little sign: Christmas Gift from Dr. XYZ......one piece per nurse. Maybe she/he will see it.

I know I know, mean spirited thoughts around the holidays.....

Do it. Do it. I would soooo love it if you actually had the nerve to.

One group bought us a microwave oven one year; this year, we got a boom box for our nursery. Yea they are good.

The other groups, OBs and peds, tend to send us a lot of good food, fruit baskets, candy, etc.

One of our OBs orders pizzas for all shifts on Christmas and New Years. The pizzas, coke and salads just show up at the beginning (or in dayshift case, the middle) Of each shift, no notice, just a note of thanks from him. I think it's great he thinks of all the shifts on both major holidays.

They all do at least remember us with something nice and I am grateful for that.

We got a 3# tin of cookies from one doc and supposedly (didn't see it myself) a small box of cookies from another.

Treats from drug reps and area HH and NH's were kept locked up in the manager's office; today before she went home (at 11:00 am) she brought them out, mostly eaten.....yeh, merry xmas to you, too. :icon_eek:

One of our docs bought our unit a microwave and fridge for our break room. Another brings in a huge basket of treats. Not all will gift us this way, but the few who do really stick out and are generous.

Hmmmmm... let me think......

Absolutely NOTHING!!!!
