4 choices & only need 2 (which ones?)

Published

I am having trouble deciding which courses to take for my pre-reqs. I have to take either "Cultural Anthropology" or "World Religions I". And the second choices are either "Logic" or "Intro to Philosophy". None of these seem to interest me, so I'm asking if anyone has taken any of these courses, and which ones do you think would be easier. I have to choose 2 out of the 4. Thanks for any advice, it is greatly appreciated!!!:uhoh3:

Hi Angel...if it were me, I'd be drawn toward Cultural Anthropology...since religious studies are NOT my thing. And though both of your second choices sound equally boring, I would take Logic over Philosophy anyday. Having taken a few philosophy courses in my ever lengthening college experience I can tell you that's one subject I steer clear of if I can help it. I even took a philosophy course from a guy who used his own textbook (one that he authored) in the course...yuck.

Best of luck with your choices!!

I loved cultural anthropology. Very cool. Either could be useful to a nurse. You should read the descriptions is your course catalog to get a better idea of which you'd rather take.

Thanks for your help. I was leaning towards Cultral Anthropology. I will probably go with Logics.

In my opnion, cultural anthropology and logic would be best, since knowlege about other cultures may come into play in your nursing career, and logic is definitely a skill that will be needed, in school and in nursing. Tonya

cultural anthropology was a required class for my bsn program. it was quite interesting. i also took intro to philosophy. beside have to read plato's meno (what is virtue and can it be taught) and a little about the major philosophers, almost all of the classes were big bull sessions and it was great fun. philosophy is nothing but expressing your opinion--at least that's what i got out of it. free thinking! an old boyfriend of mine took logic and had a lot of trouble with it. i remember him having to determine the truth and falseness of statements based on a little bit of information that they were given. we touched a little on logic when i was taking geometry and trig because some of the math requires formal proofs. i had a hard time understanding the discussion about logic in the appendix of the math textbooks.

I took Cultural Antropology and it was an easy A. It was basically the same people from sociology and psychology just viewed from a different perspective. I haven't taken philophophy yet, but that's what I'm taking in summer 2, so I can't give you any advice on that one.

I am taking Cultural Anthropology right now and I love it!!!!! It is not a difficult course if you are a talker, a reader, a paper writer (I do not mean hard papers), and a thinker. In fact we apply critical thinking in my class so that will be helpful in the Nursing program. I also enjoy learning about different people and my Professor is great!!!

As for Philosophy or Logic... both sound bad to me. :trout:

I have taken Philosophy and hated it because my Professor drowned on and on and on in a monotone voice reading the textbook and scribbling nonsense on the board.... The first row usually fell asleep and he did not bother to wake them up! :uhoh3:

If I have to take it over again, I will contemplate suicide! No, I'm kidding. I will contact others I know and find a good Professor.

That is my advice to you. Contact other students who have taken the course in your school and see which Professors make the subjects enjoyable and base your decision on their assessments. Good Luck. ;)

I'm surprised nobody has chimed in and recommended the World Religions class. I'd take that one, without a doubt. Religion/spirituality does intersect with nursing quite a bit and I think it is quite valuable to have a more than basic understanding of the tenets and implications of different religions on patients. JMHO. I'd enjoy a philosophy class more myself, but I think the world religions class could help you more with patients.

Thanks for all of your advice. I am going to also check with other students at the college to see which classes/instructors would be better for me. I can't do this though until I actually move down to the coast. Thanks again to everyone.:thankya:
