Hi!
I am enrolled to start chm130 at Rio next month as was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect! I am ok with math, I am finishing up mat120 at CGCC and am not finding it to dificult. I have to take this class online instead of in person due to scheduling conflicts, so any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I'm taking CHM 130 with 130LL lab at the moment at CGCC Williams. Its pretty straight forward. The only thing you should be aware of is that the entire course builds upon itself. If you fall behind in the early chapters then you will not do well in the later chapters as the knowledge will extend through everything else you do.
From my experience with my particular instructor he tends to add 4-5 "trick" questions per test (usually around 35 questions total). These questions tend to focus on exceptions to certain rules to ensure that you are really familiar with the material. You can still manage a low "B" grade missing them, but "A's" require you to read the test carefully and have learned the material sufficiently.
I'll be taking BIO 201 at Rio Salado starting in May as the Summer Instructor here has not so great reputation.
Good luck.
Thanks! I stay at home with my 1 and 2 year old so I should have plenty of time (haha) to study. I know how important it is to not fall behind. I'm determined to get this one out of the way. Thanks again for your reply!

I was taking 130 at RMCC and had to drop it. I was taking mat 120 at the same time against what everyone told me.
If you are solid with you math you should be ok. Lot's of conversions and mathematical calcs. I will take it again I think after I take bio. I have had 4 sems of math and I am beat to death with formulas.
Good luck, and let me know how the online chemistry is . I may go that route. I tend to be a better learning with the online courses.
ciao!

I took CHM online thru RioSalado and it was very doable. I actually enjoyed chemistry for the first time!
Good Luck.

Were the test all online? How was the math? And who and how was the professor?
And was it fun? I am a kinetic learner and I find online so much more enjoyable. If I don't understand I can play the lessons over and over for reinforcement...
Like in algebra, last year I struggled with a failing grades and managed a c to pass. It was in class room. This sumester I am taking online and have a solid A, close to A+.
What about the labs?
Thanks for your sharing...
Gives me hope.

Hi everyone!
I am also about to take CHM 130 with 130LL in a few months at Rio Salado, I heard that instructors give low grades to their students because they are expecting too much from them?
Can someone please recommend a great instructor for CHM130? I am yearning to earn an A in this class :)

The tests and labs were online. the only tests that need to be taken in person are the midterm and final. i took it 2 years ago, so i don't remember my professor. if you follow the instructions for the labs and use the "lab report template" they provide you'll do great. i really enjoyed taking pictures of the lab experiments to add into the lab reports. i hadn't taken chemistry since high school (which i barely passed) and got an A online.

the chemistry online is easier than BIO 201, 202, & 205. i took it 2 years ago and received an A. it is a very doable class. online quizes and lab reports with midterm and final exam taken in person. sorry i can't recommend an instructor, it's been too long....
good luck! :)
Thanks everyone for your responses. Gives me hope:) do you remember if you were allowed to use note cards or if they give you a common conversions chart for the midterm and final?
if i remember correctly you are given a periodic table and i think a formulas/conversions table. you could always call one of the testing centers and ask them what the handouts for CHM 130 are. :)

I just finished the lecture portion this semester (am taking lab in person) - There is not a lot of objectivity involved in the weekly AYL assignments/quizzes, as most of them consist of problems and calculations, even on the weekly AYL assignments. So, you either get it right or you don't. At least, that was my experience.
Re: midterm and final, I was not given formulas, the only thing I was given that I used was the periodic table. You cannot bring in outlines or note cards, only a pencil, calculator, and they provide scratch paper. As long as you are doing practice questions so that you know your formulas backwards and forwards and the AYL essays (essays on midterm/final are taken from these essays), you should do fine on the midterm/final.
