Hello friends! This thread is for everyone applying to CHLA's RN Residency Program starting in March 2020. Hopefully we can keep each other posted on the application process, interviews and whatever else. I'm trying to apply to their NICCU! What about you?

Here is some clarification - Their pay is a little odd. So, the starting base is about $34/hr, which sounds very low compared to other hospitals. But, whenever you’re working a 12hr shift, you get 1.5x on any hours over 8. So you’re getting time and a half on your last 4 hours for every shift you work. That time and a half over the last 4 hours averaged over 12 hours equals and extra $5.67/hr. So you’re really making right under $40, which is on average $2-5 less than other hospitals.
So it is lower than most other hospitals in LA, but it’s not as crazy low as people make it out so seem. You’re still pretty solid. And once you graduate the new grad program, you get a sizable bump that will put you close to what every other hospital makes.

@NewGradRN_510_Peds I believe they said they’d have offers out before Christmas, so there is still some time!

Hi! Congratulations! LA is pretty vast so it'll be dependent on what type of lifestyle you want as well as what you're looking for in terms of neighborhood. I have 2 dogs so living close to CHLA was kind of out of the question since I don't want to have to worry about trash that they could get into on our walks and/or having to step over people sleeping on the sidewalk.
I used to live by the beach (Redondo Beach) and it would take me about 50min each way - then I had to factor in 10min to take the shuttle from the parking lots to CHLA campus, so I was looking at an hour commute at minimum.
I just moved to Sherman Oaks and now it's about a 20ish minute drive in the morning for the AM shift (15min on the weekends) and about a 25min drive home. If you're doing night shifts, it'll be a longer due to rush hour (an hour each way). I know some nurses who live in West Hollywood and that's about a 30-45min drive each way as well depending on traffic.
Hope this helps!
Thank you jtw! Yes, that advice was very helpful. I’m in my mid 20s so i’d Like a lively living environment but would still like the privacy and some peace and quiet. Seems like if I choose to live in an area that is congested but closer to the hospital, it’ll still take me a little while to get there factoring in the traffic and because ill be night shift eventually. I’ll take a look at Sherman Oaks and surrounding areas then. ?

Congrats on your offer, @AlexandraRanee! I’ll be moving there as well in March. Regarding locations, it may be worth while for you to research areas that are along Metro red line. The train stop right outside the hospital and is super convenient. It runs through North Hollywood, Hollywood, Koreatown, all the way through DTLA.
Hi all,
I figured I post - got into Float Pool. Any others? I believe there was either 2 or 3 spots open.
Anyone able to make a FB group for our cohort. I think it would be benefical. I have no idea how to make one on FB lol. If anyone does just post the name group here so we can all add.
Btw. I live in DTLA. The commute is about 15-20 min street wise. Dtla is becoming really expensive but there are some places that are affordable but usually are apartment building. But the commute is cake. Thought I’d share some input.
