Hi everyone! Starting a thread for CHLA's New Grad RN Fall 2025 Residency. 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Simo1224 said:I had my interview today! Same questions two part why peds/why CHLA, then diversity/inclusion then above and beyond. They were nodding and smiling a lot but I cant tell if they liked me or they were just genuinely nice people. I'm feeling super impatient I need to know if I did well. I blacked out so I honestly don't know how I did. I finished then went oh shoot I forgot a bunch of important points I wrote down. I think my preceptorship in the PICU helped a lot because it seemed like they appreciated pediatric centered examples. Ahh sorry I just want to vent I'm feeling so many feelings.
If anyone wants to chat or vent let me know I'd love to talk to someone other than my boyfriend about it. Comment and I'll try to find a way to share my contact info!
I felt the same way girl, literally prepared so much and answered the "why I wanna be a peds nurse" with "I actually didn't wanna be a peds nurse when I started nursing school, it was actually the last specialty I though I would want to work since I have children and felt it was triggering .....” Like that was not what I had practiced but I definitely left the interview with a huge gapping hold in my stomach for like 3 hours after just, feeling like I bombed that interview. But hey at least we had the opportunity to interview and we are gaining experience! We'll be okay!

I feel the same way! I start being honest then I'm like wait that's probably not what I want to hear. But a genuine response as opposed to a rehearsed response always comes off more sincere in my opinion. Don't worry

Does anyone know how they decide who moves forward?? Just confuses me cause almost everyone is interviewed by someone different on different days, etc. so it's like how do they all come together and decide? Or is it just up to the person who interview us? Genuinely curious

I applied to the PICU and ED, one of the people interviewing me did his new grad residency through the PICU and works there now, I don't know if that has any relevance

Genuinely think it goes based on vibes

Yes there was time to ask question! They first introduced themselves, what they do, how long they've been with CHLA, and how they are part of the team that read the applications but they don't know/don't remember if they were one of the individuals who read yours specifically. They then let you know it's a 3 question interview and it should take about 15 minutes. After that they then start to ask the questions and you just answer and once that is all done, they let you know that's the end and they give you a brief overview of the next steps/the timeline and then after that they ask if you have any questions for them! Hope that helps! That's kind of how I remember it going.

From what I know I believe they write down your answers and what they liked and didn't like and they will give them to the units you applied for and from their the units will make their decisions.

They said something along the lines of there's a points system with a rubric, and if you get a high enough score you'll be sent on for the second round! I asked about how the next steps would be seeing as we ranked 2 unit preferences, and she said you get matched depending on how many people each unit needs... But she also said it's possible to be invited to interview for both units! She did also mention something about how PICU/NICU and ED often have the most applicants so they're the most competitive. Hope this helps! 🙂
