Children's Hospital Colorado RN Residency: August 2014

U.S.A. Colorado

Published

Just wanted to start a thread as there appears to be some from the past. Has anyone else applied for the August 2014 cohort? I would love to hear and keep in contact with other current applicants as well as those from the past.

Below is the program timeline for August 2014:

o March 28 - April 7: Positions posted

o May 12 - May 16: Select/notify applicants to interview

o June 9 - June 20: Interviews

o August 18: Start of program

For purposes of discussion:

o Are you from Colorado or planning on moving?

o Previous experience working in pediatrics?

o What units are you most interested in?

Hope to hear from others soon!

I applied.... not getting too excited, because I don't want to get my hopes up.

And, I'm moving there after graduation, regardless of getting a position or not, which scares me. Luckily my bf will be supporting me there, but makes me nervous on the job market as his job is somewhat limiting my location. ... but it is a choice I'm making.

And I'm definitely interested in pretty much everything. But, for reasons I'm not going to share in an open forum, I know this is the place I am supposed to be.

Anyway. I have 3 weeks until my last nursing class! Yes!!!!

Good luck to everyone, even if you're applying elsewhere. I know that sometimes it is discouraging to not get a position somewhere, but I've become more and more of a believer that everything happens for a reason. Even if we don't understand it in the present. May we all find perfect positions (not necessarily dream jobs) for our transition from student to nurse!!! Good luck!

Ps. After reading the other threads, I have yet to figure out what all the different status of applications are. And ideas?

Glad to see there is someone else on here that applied. I am from out of state and will probably only be moving if offered a position for this program, so I am keeping my options open right now. From reading the previous threads it appears this is a very competitive program, so like you said I don't want to get my hopes up early in the process.

I am more interested in the critical care areas and would love to get a position somewhere in the PICU, but realize it isn't the easiest for a new grad. I work at a children's hospital right now as a patient care assistant on the Hem/Onc unit - definitely love it but would rather try something else as an RN and return to it down the road.

As far as the different status updates for applications I found them on the website:

Applied - You are a current applicant and have successfully applied.

Recruiter Reviewed - The recruiter has reviewed your application and is in the process of determining which candidates best meet the hiring manager's needs. You will be notified if your application is routed to the hiring manager.

Route - The recruiter has screened your application and has routed it to the hiring manager for review. The hiring manager will contact you directly for an interview if you are selected as one of the top candidates. Please allow a few weeks for your application status to be updated.

Declined - Thank you for your interest in a career at Children's Hospital Colorado. We have identified other candidates that better meet the hiring manager's needs. Please continue to visit our website for other opportunities.

However, I am not sure if these same terms apply for this program as my status is currently Screen, which isn't on the list. I'm assuming this is the status between applying and it being reviewed?

That's the same status I have.

And I had a real hard time "picking" just three. Because, genuinely, I believe I can thrive even where and learn so much everywhere. I really do like my experience in critical care that I've learned too. We don't really have a children's hospital here, as most of those that need ore acute care tend to be flown to other areas, so my clinical experience as a peds critical care is very limited. I thi NJ k I make up for it in a lot of different ways though.

Guess we will see what happens. I tend to be more of a realist.

As for the status, I did get an application that I was initially screened; the way I interpreted it read that they decided I met at least the requested requirements, and we're going to screen me further to decide about passing on to manager.

I really am impressed with the Denver area in general and would recommend it. Luckily, I have some connections there already, but I would definitely consider the area without my bf living there.

Anyway, I really do already have my hopes up for this position, I'm just trying to not get too excited or hopeful.

I'm from out of state so I'd be moving if I got a position. I applied and my status still just says screen. I would LOVE hem/onc, second choice would be PICU. Otherwise I'm open to anything pediatrics. I had an externship last summer at a childrens hospital in Illinois on pediatric intermediate care. It was like stepdown b/t ICU and gen peds, but also took all of the St. Jude inpatient admits.

Specializes in Med Surg/Ortho.

Good luck to all of you! I really wish they would open a Children's up in Northern CO. I would love to work at one after school.

Hi all - I am from Michigan and will be graduating from the University of Michigan in May, so I'd obviously be making a big move out West to CO, if I happen to get the job.

I have babysat for over 8 years, but have been babysitting weekly for a family here in town for the past 3 years. I also had to opportunity for an summer nurse externship at Mott Children's Hospital here in Ann Arbor this past summer and I currently work on the Child and Adolescent Psych unit at Mott Children's.

My top 3 units were: Oncology, General Medical/Surgical and Surgical/Rehab/Neurology

Has anyone heard anything back at all?!

Glad to see others are starting to find this thread! Unfortunately, from years past it seems they follow the posted scheduled as best they can so probably won't be seeing status changes until mid-May. Although, I wish it was sooner!

I just got notification that my application was passed onto the hiring manager from the recruiters! Sounds like good news. Anyone else??!

I applied to the August 2014 start date and was just notified that my app was sent to a hiring manager. I live here in Colorado and was able to do my senior practicum at Children's. I picked Oncology, general med, and the CPCU.

I did not hear anything, but am staying optimistic. I am wondering if they are doing the screenings in order or in groups. I did not hear about the program until the the day before the application was due and did not submit until that night, unfortunately.
